1. Final thoughts from Muschamp on LSU

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp gave his final preview of South Carolina's key matchup with LSU in his weekly call-in show Thursday night. Here are three notes to know from the hour-long show.

Izzy is a go

South Carolina junior defensive back Israel Mukuamu will play Saturday at LSU after missing the last game and a half with a nagging groin injury.

"Israel is ready to go," Muschamp said. "He had a really good practice Wednesday and a really good day today moving around. He's moving around the best he's moved since training camp."

The Gamecocks will be without reserve cornerback Cam Smith who suffered a laceration in practice last week when a teammate accidentally cleated him on a deep ball attempt.

Jalen Brooks will definitely debut

Not that it's any surprise, but Muschamp reiterated what he said earlier in the week when wide receiver transfer Jalen Brooks was cleared by the NCAA: that he'll definitely play this Saturday against LSU.

Muschamp is excited for Brooks and said that he can help the team in a number of ways. He credited Ray Tanner and the compliance staff at South Carolina for continuing to fight on Brooks' behalf.

LSU names a starter

This news obviously didn't come from South Carolina but it did come down from LSU last night: The Tigers will start true freshman quarterback T.J. Finley against the Gamecocks.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron reiterated that both Finley and fellow true freshman Max Johnson would play against the Gamecocks.

"It was a very close battle, but at the end we felt that T.J. nudged Max just a little," he said. "I wish I could start two. But T.J.'s gonna be the starter there, and we're gonna give him time to get his work done."

3. 📅 On This Date

Oct. 23, 1958 - The Gamecocks entered the 56th matchup with Clemson as six-point underdogs, but stood as dominant victors in a 26-6 rout of the Tigers at the end of the day. The win was led by the senior backfield of Bobby Bunch, Alex Hawkins and King Dixon, each getting their first victory over Clemson. Each of the three scored once on the day, along with fullback John Saunders, while the rushing yardage was spread fairly evenly between Saunders (19-69), Bunch (18-61) and Hawkins (12-57). The Tigers actually scored first on a short touchdown run by quarterback Harvey White, but USC answered with a 75-yard drive and touchdown to close out the first half. Saunders finished the drive with a one-yard TD run but a penalty on the extra point led to a failed two-point conversion and a 6-6 halftime tie. King Dixon's 36-yard return of the second half kickoff launched a drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Bunch and a two-point conversion run by Hawkins for a 14-6 lead. Carolina added two fourth-quarter scores, the first coming on a 57-yard drive that finished up with a one-yard run by Dixon and a 20-6 lead. USC's final score came with 1:19 left on a two-yard run by Hawkins. The defensive star of the game was senior linebacker Dwight Keith, who made tackles all over the field as Clemson's leading rusher (White) mustered only 31 yards.
