DALLAS -- No chance of getting to everybody in the most crowded locker room of the season, but I was able to get to a few players:
Brea Beal:
Talking about her home town of Rock Island, Ill, just by the border with Iowa:
"it's a small place. I'm kind of grateful to say I made it out of there. Only a select few can say they made it out of there and completed college at a high athletic level, just as well as going to the pros."
On the difference between this year's team and last year:
"We're much younge.r Even though we only had one true veteran to come in, it feels younger. It feels like the upperclassmen have to kind of manage the situations and take control."
On if Iowa recruited her:
"I think they were one of the first to recruit me, around 8th grade. I think as time went on I kind of wanted to get out of that area."
On the pandemic:
"Freshman year just because of how fun it was, especially finishign that SEC Touranment it was so fun, especially with Ty and Kiki we wanted to keep going. It broke my heart a little bit, but after that we just knew we wanted to keep going more and more."
On the matchup with Caitlin:
"With me like, that's just me with anyone I guard. I don't really put someone above the rest of the people. Anybody can go off with anything when they play us. Anything can happen."
Kierra Fletcher:
On her first Final Four:
"It's been cool, I'm super excited. We've put in a lot of work to get here."
(joked that the cowboy hat is "cool and she's "never had one before):
She also said that she played against Iowa's Molly Davis in AAU and that she "knew of her" growing up together in Michigan, but never had a lot of direct contact with her.
On the mindset going into facing Iowa's guards:
"Just making sure that we stay attached to everyone and following the game plan to make sure that we're staying focused on everyone."
Laeticia Amihere:
On the pandemic cutting out their first tournament run:
"It was tough. I felt like we were the team to beat for sure next year. But we try not to dwell on it too much, because we ended up getting our National Championship."
On how that was a motivating factor:
"It does for sure. Losing is something that we never want to feel. Obviously we haven't done that this year, so we want to keep it rolling."
On having Final Four expierence:
"It ramps up. This locker room has never been this full. The viewership has never been this high. Things are just looking a lot better for viewership and how much traction we're getting."
On the excitement for tomorrow:
"We've never played a team like them, and we've never played them. I would say that we've just never played them, honestly. We've never matched up against Iowa. We've had a unique experience where we've been able to play many teams that we've played before, but they're a team that we haven't."
Kamilla Cardoso:
On the excitement of the Final Four:
"We're just excited to be here. We've worked very hard all year, and we're ready."
On Iowa:
"I think they have great shooters, but we just have to stick to our gameplan and play how we've played all year long."
Sania Feagin:
Joking about the cowboy hats the teams in Dallas were given as their player gifts:
"It's not really my vibe (laughing), I'm just going with it."
On the most exciting thing about tommorrow:
"Just being in front of so many people and having fun."
She said that it's "100 percent true" that they've never faced anyone like Iowa.
On what makes Iowa unique:
"The way they space the floor, they way they can shoot the ball and the way they talk on offense."
On the challenge:
"Whatever coach's gameplan is, we're going to execute it."
Olivia Thompson:
On being at another Final Four:
"It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. So grateful, so thankful to be here, it feels great for us. We came here last year and we were really excited. It's a crazy adjustment. This is a huge stage, this is a huge platform but coming back now, we feel a little more seasoned. We have to stay down and keep our composure, becuase we have a job to do."
On COVID:
"That was a huge motivation. We wanted it so bad. We were all looking forward to going to New Orleans our freshman year, and when that ended it kind of hit us in our chest a little bit because we didnt' get to see Ty or Kiki at all again after that. A lot of it was just trying to get it back for them, and for us because we kind of felt like we had it. We put everything we had into that season, so for it to end that close to the end, it hurts. We just worked extra hard to get back to this moment and to get back to this moment, it's amazing."
On the pandemic:
We did team-wide Zoom calls and coach would just ask us how we were doing and check in. We were all kind of confused, we were lost, we were sad, it was just hard. People just had to leave with what they had, so there wasn't any closure. It was really hard."
