Sandidge looking to get back to his old self

Introducing our new writing intern @Michael Sauls, who's going to be helping us out this football season. Here's his first article from today's availability.

School vs school in NIL handling

Listening to Dave Portnoy’s podcast. Please save your hot barstool is evil take. I don’t care. He’s saying Texas is being a pain in the ass to deal with on NILs. Down to the athletes can’t use any shade of orange or the word “Texas” in an ad. LSU is basically saying “Knock yourself out and make that cash!”. The next recruiting frontier is how rigid your athletic department is regarding NIL. USC has appeared to be pretty proactive with NIL so maybe we’ll avoid whatever issues Texas is having.

Baby Bravo heating up in August

One of my concerns has been the lack of production at the catcher’s position. It’s been awhile since we had a power bat behind the plate but down in Mississippi there is a “prospect “
who might just fit the bill. He is our former first round pick Shea Langeliers who is stroking it.
He had another multi homer game and will probably finish with 23-25 homeruns this year.
With Contreras at Gwinnett we should be set at the position since he has been deemed a star in the making. Personally I don’t think Contreras has the power bat but his defensive skills are his ticket to the majors. Go Braves and let’s blow the month of August up!

OT: Best services for TV & Internet .......

I am likely to be moving to the Hillsborough, NC area between now and the end of the year.
I have Spectrum cable for TV and also for internet. Here's my chance to break from them. I've
pretty much been limited to them here in Hickory. Looking for reasonable options for both in Hillsborough
or very near there. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Must haves are:
SEC Network, History Channel, local channels, and that's about it.
I don't need HBO, Cinemax and the like. Very seldom anything on there worth watching.

Estimated costs would be appreciated.

*** Second edition of The Verdict: A Delp recruiting win could help change the narrative for Gamecocks

In South Carolina, the verdict is published by the Clerk of Court. In other words, when a jury has reached a verdict, the Clerk of Court, not a member of the jury, announces the verdict to the courtroom.

But in every jury trial – whether criminal or civil – there is no mistaking that the jury, and only the jury, is the finder of all facts.

Chris Paschal is a trial attorney at the Goings Law Firm in Columbia, South Carolina. He also is the Co-Founder of Front Porch Football and creator of the Paschal Gamecock Podcast. Follow Chris on Twitter @FPFPaschal.

Starting in August and running throughout the season, Chris will be writing a weekly column called The Verdict - presented by the Goings Law Firm where he will look to give you a fan's opinion on a topic related to South Carolina football. Your reactions to his verdict are encouraged!

Here is his second column:

Updates: defensive players speak post-practice (Aug. 10)

Practice is expected to end around noon, then we'll get players after that over the next little bit. Guys expected to meet with the media today:

Jahmar Brown
Hot Rod Fitten
Mo Kaba
Carlins Platel
Rick Sandidge
Jordan Strachan

Carlins Platel up first.

--Accilmization has gone well. He's gotten thrown into the fire but adjusting well. He went through a lot of coaching changes at Assumption so he's learned how to adapt quickly. Most defenses are the same but it's more about learning different techniques and terminology.

--Right now he's focused on playing nickel. Said he's gotten a few outside reps but being nickel has been going well. Said he's gotten a pick in every practice and needs to sharpen up mentally.

--Thinks his physicality helps him at that nickel spot and he can really out-physical some of the smaller slot receivers. Biggest thing is learning how to play nickel. He's a guy who's always played corner and been on an island and now he's playing in more close quarters.

--Not a huge jump from DII to the SEC. Said there might be one or two really good receivers he'll see on a team but in the SEC there are four out there at a time. "Football is football. You have to be an athlete out there."

--Jokes it's really hot down here. Said it really gets to him sometimes but he's adjusting to it.

--Asked about guys he's covered, mentions all are really good. Said it's been a challenge but he's getting used to it.

--Says he laughs at some of the guys on the team who thinks 55 degrees is cold. Said during some offseason conditioning it was raining and guys were cold with the wind but he was shirtless and hot running.

Jahmar Brown up now.

--Said safety is "definitely different." There are some linebacker tendencies he has to get out of his system but it's going well.

--Menitons he first came in and thought he was an athletic linebacker and feels like that's his strength. Now he thinks his body type fits what the safeties are and he feels like he's "blending in with all the guys."

--Played safety and DIME linebacker last year, was playing some nickel in the spring and made the full transition to safety in April and May. Thinks being there full-time will certainly help him. He's gotten better with reading defenses.

--He's fluctuated in weight but is sitting at 211 right now and thinks that's good.

--Said he needs to get better in man to man coverage, which he hasn't done at linebacker. Wants to be able to use his leverage better as camp goes on this summer.

--On Clayton White's defensive scheme: "No one will figure this defense out. Not one offense we play will figure this defense out."

Mo Kaba currently up.

--Everything is faster in Clayton White's defense. Said it's one or two different checks and guys are moving quickly.

--Said the coaching staff is impressed with how much the defense is learning and how quickly it's happening. Mentions guys are flying around and it will be really hard to figure it out as an opponent.

--He's been playing a lot of MIKE and WIL linebackers, primarily at WIL. He thinks his quickness lines up with what that position entails.

--Clayton White gives off a "great vibe." Mentions he wants to do well to impress White and keep proving it.

--Kaba is splitting time at WIL with Brad Johnson and Damani Staley.

--Said he feels everyone has someone to prove. Said if you don't, you settle. Defensively, especially at linebacker, they feel like they have to bring it every day.

--Mentions defensive backs make a lot of calls in the defense, which is different than every defense he's played it. It means linebackers are able to get in and play quickly.

Rick Sandidge now up at the podium.

--Says he's still learning the terminology of White's defense but thinks this defense has a chance to be really good.

--Mentions there are a lot of guys at the D-line. "We're like 11 deep."

--Said looking back on his pictures from the winter is startling. Jokes he was "chubby" and he's really slimmed down this camp.

--Mentions his confidence level is as high as it's ever been. He wants to get back to "high school Rick" and wants to make a name for himself.

--He likes Jimmy Lindsey a lot as his fourth D-line coach. Said Lindsey is big on doing reps the right way.

--Said his time on campus has been a "roller coaster, for sure." He's learned a lot of lessons and tried to learn from those. Feels great.

Hot Rod Fitten now.

--Asked about the name change, said it was easier for everybody to understand and pronounce. Said it was just easier for everybody. He has not legally changed his name, just on the roster.

--Said he's looking forward to any potential NIL deals from it.

--Everyone's bought into the system. It's easy to pick it up and everyone's trying to "really dominate" this year.

Jordan Strachan up.

--He came in at 215 and is up to 245 pounds now. Mentions it was hard at first with the new weight and dealt with some hamstring issues but the summer really helped him get used to that weight. Getting in the right nutrition program helped with that.

--He doesn't like to be labeled as a pass rusher only. Mentions he also had a lot of tackles for loss and he can cover in a spot that not a lot of guys his size can cover.

Looking at the 2021 offense ......

Some assumptions: we stay relatively healthy. our run game continues to produce. our TE's are mismatches and we use the heck out of them to gash defenses. we have at least 4 WR's who are able to get open and catch the ball. we do not turn the ball over much nor do we shoot our fingers & toes off by committing dumb penalties (off sides, holding, etc., etc.).

QB- Doty / Brown. Solid 1-2 punch. Doty must have patience. receivers will open up AND his run lanes will appear if he has the patience to not commit on his decisions too soon. Brown is the passer of the 2. He will play. He's a better runner than many think but his passing it what gets him on the field.

RB- Harris / Lloyd / White / Amos. very talented but also deep group. they will maximize what the OL gives them.

TE- Muse / Bell / Jenkins / Shaw / Mullins / Kenyion. Deep & talented group. Bell & Jenkins are serious mismatches. Muse is good all around with experience. I could see this being a focal point of the passing game.

WR - Brown / Brooks / Joyner / Caldwell / O-Smith / Powers / Vann / Leggett. I think our best will come from this group. Hopefully at least 4 will step up and be productive SEC receivers. .... maybe more. The 1st 3 are ones I feel will be significantly improved from last year. I guess we will start learning that in just over a month. I personally think this will be Dak Joyner's breakout year.

OL - Nichols / Lee / Wonnum / Turnetine / Moore. Theses are likely the tackles. We have size, some athleticism and even experience in this group. I am hoping Adkins can coach 'em up and have them being one of the better SEC groups.
Gwyn / Rhodes / Douglas / Manos / Jones / Murphy. Some of the OT's could morph into interior guys. It'll all boil down to getting our best 5 on the field. We do have some talent here. I think it will all come down to seeing what Adkins can get out of this group. The potential seems to be there to be a good, solid SEC OL. I think we have some true "road graders" on the OL. Can we pass block well enough is my real question? I think we can.

I believe our offense will be quite a bit better than the past several years. Getting CWM at least a state away will have a positive affect. Satterfield is IMO a quality OC. Beamer will unleash him to score TD's. Doty is better than most give him credit for. Brown is as well. Our run game will be a good one. Our passing game (led by the TE's) will be good & solid. We will have at least 2 WR's step up. I like Joyner and Brown to do that so we'll have balance on offense. With a solid passing game, our run game will be better than last year. And with our depth, it'll be like human waves of excellent RB's coming at the defense. And then there's Doty's running ability. That alone will make us very efficient in short yardage and the red zone. Don't be surprised if we avg 30+ ppg on offense. We do that and between 6 & 8 wins is eminently possible.
