Insider notes from Tuesday's football practice

Wes Mitchell should have more from practice but here were a few observations:

--From an injury standpoint, Kevin Harris was in full pads but didn't participate in the part of practice we saw. He was working on rehab in the indoor facility. Along with Harris, I saw Bruce Staley, Chad Terrell and Patrick Reedy heading to the indoor for rehab as well.

Jaheim Bell had a wrap on his quad but was a full participant in practice what practice the media saw.

--Scouts from at least the Bears, Panthers, Raiders and Chargers were all on hand to watch practice today. The Chargers scouts were focused on watching South Carolina's defensive line almost exclusively.

--From a team drill and depth chart perspective, the first team defensive line looked the same from Friday's practice with Aaron Sterling at end, Zacch Pickens and Jabari Ellis at tackle and Enagbare as the primary edge rusher. I didn't see the first team linebackers or one starting corner but Marcellas Dial was at one outside corner spot, David Spaulding at nickel. Jaylan Foster and RJ Roderick were the starting safety.

--Second team defense was: Strachan and Burch at end, Sandidge and Tonka Hemingway at tackle, Debo Williams at one linebacker spot (didn't catch the other), Joey Hunter and Dominick Hill at corner, Carlins Platel at nickel and Jahmar Brown and Jaylin Dickerson at the safety spots.

Jahmar Brown had a really good play during team period, coming over on a deep ball and hitting the receiver right as the ball got there to force an incompletion.

--From an offensive perspective, I didn't catch much of the first team offensive line (most of what I saw looked the same) but Josh Vann, Dakereon Joyner and Jalen Brooks ran at receiver with Nick Muse. I saw MarShawn Lloyd and ZaQuandre White get first team reps as well with Luke Doty at quarterback.

Lloyd was in pads for the first time during a training camp and was moving well and cutting, not looking like someone a year removed from an ACL injury.

--Jason Brown ran with what looked like the next group with Juju McDowell getting some second team reps there. Hank Manos was the second team center with Trae Kenion and EJ Jenkins getting some reps with that group as well. OrTre Smith and Xavier Legette were at receiver.

Smith made a nice catch on a shallow route then turned it up field for a nice gain, prompting some up-downs for the second-team defense; Clayton White was not pleased.

--As mentioned in the live thread, Juju McDowell was returning punts with Jalen Brooks and Dakereon Joyner. McDowell has had some praised heaped on him by some returners Monday. He made a mistake on a rep during Tuesday's practice, hitting a pylon on the sideline and stopping before the ball bounced but Joyner was right on him correcting him and even told him to get back into the drill and take another rep before Joyner went. Joyner's been characterized as a leader on the team and that was an example of it.

--During individual team drills, the presumed starter at center (Eric Douglas) was snapping to Luke Doty, Hank Manos was snapping with Colten Gauthier, Vincent Murphy to Jason Brown and Collin Heinrich snapping to Connor Jordan.

--Zacch Pickens looks the part of an interior defensive lineman in the SEC and I heard a few times Jimmy Lindsey pleased with his reps in individual work.

Great piece on how Luke Day has transformed the role of S&C Coach at USC

Great piece by the new Gamecock reporter for The State, Augusta Stone. Luke Day not only made the guys physically stronger, but also mentally stronger as well. Additionally, he taught the players about the Five Love Languages, then had them take the test to determine what each player's Love Language was. He then shared that info with their coaches and explained how that translates to how that player is motivated and how hard they can be coached. Really cool stuff in this piece.

Feeling ‘stronger than ever’: How Luke Day prepped Gamecocks for first season

MBB recruiting questions for Collyn

@Collyn Taylor, what do you know, if anything, about Dominick Barlow? I see that we along with a number of others offered him on Saturday. I hadn’t heard of him before, but his offer list seems impressive. Are we at all in it with him?

Also, I’ve heard some national guys saying they’re convinced that Jazian Gortman is turning pro, but I haven’t seen any local guys speculate that. Is this something you’ve been hearing whispers about?

Thanks in advance for the info!

Late arrival on the Beamer train

Since there wasn’t a Holtz or a Spurrier to lure out of retirement, initially I thought okay, better than Scott and Muschamp, but is that enough.

Recently a buddy reminded me that Beamer was the point guy in recruiting when we got Alshon, Gilmore, Lattimore, Etc.

Then, now that talking season is in full swing, I gather an honest passion from him about this state. It’s not coming across as just lip service that he’s using his birthplace as a talking point.

he can probably get the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, can he find the right staff for X’s and O’s?

We tried the up and comer once with Scott. Maybe we get it right this time and have a long ride.

Braves 🆚 Nationals 8/7/21 Feeling Groovy Weekend 😎

Welcome to another edition of Gamecock Central Braves Baseball ⚾️ Chat 💬. I am your host @Pfunk Cock along with a plethora of regular participants in the chat.
Login to view embedded media Yes I brought out Simon and Garfunkel because I am old damnit and People my age have prerogatives 😎.

I am feeling Groovy because the Braves have begun to show signs of life after languishing the first 2/3 of the season. We are embarking on our first 5 game winning streak with a victory tonight and sole possession of second place of the Phillies 🆚 Mest score remain constant. That means we have made up a 7.5 game deficit in a 3 week window of time. As a matter of fact I am PFunk and feeling groovy is nice but let me call on my South Carolina Roots

The Braves are getting on the good foot after the trade deadline and O love it. It even got The Big Shoehuna to have another giveaway today as Braves Fans are walking with a Pepe in their step. Women are approaching me again with smiles (They know a winning streak walk) 😎😎 and time just seems to be standing still so that I can savor the moment and really take it all in.
The Braves will throw Charlie Morton as they try to go 3 over 500 and gain some possession of second place in the Eastern Division. The team is also looking for its first 5 game streak of the season. He will be opposed by Nationals Rookie Josiah Gray. I have no information on him as he is a recent call up and has an era above 4.85 while throwing 13 innings on his young career. Statistics have the Braves winning tonight but that is why they play the games. Here is hoping for a Streak to Remember. 😎😎

It's gonna be fun to watch this division down the stretch. Nats and Marlins have waived the white flag and will become the whipping posts of the division from here on out. PECOTA has the Phillies winning the division, trailed by Mets then Braves (5 game separation between 1st and 3rd).

LA and Philly have a monster series starting tonight as do Braves and Reds. I think these are both going to be key indicators where the teams really are. Philly is mostly at full strength and Harper is earning every penny of that contract. Braves are due to get Anderson, Ynoa, d'Arnaud, and Eddie Rosario all back here soon. No idea what's up with DeGrom but it sounds like nobody really knows.

7 of Philly's remaining 16 series are against .500 or better teams.
8 of ATL's remaining 16 series are against .500 or better teams.
9 of NY's remaining 17 series are against .500 or better teams.
And these teams don't really play each other much the rest of the way, but the Braves will close out the season with 4 against the Padres on the road, then 6 straight home games against the Phillies and Mets. The Mets really have a couple of tough stretches this month and next to worry about.

I don't know how it's all gonna shake out, but it's going to be a fun ride. I'll probably try and get to at least two of the Braves/Padres games in San Diego in September.

OT greenville news.....hasta la vista baby

i am a reader. have always loved to read newspapers, different ones for different slants. have subscribed to the greenville news for decades. i terminated that a couple of days ago. it is a joke......beyond advertisements for hearing aids there is paltry national news....some local yokel stuff but i am tired of a sports section so abjectly pathetic.....well.....as an example......the Olympics.....an in state young woman repped the nation on the womens basketball team, played a key role. the coach is an in state coach of some fame.
one might expect the typical five line notation but since the gold medal.....nothing even in today's paper. i know it covers the local home team, leaving out Furman of course.....but i am fed up with front page stuff on the best running backs in the acc....dabo asking his players to get a vaccine.......a local girl failing at the olympics in the pole vault......who is the second string place kick holder for clemson.....but nary a word about an international good story about our own state.
some lady called from the greenville nuisance presumably to query.....i hung up on her. screw them and the little rag. i am not into cancel culture but do insist that i have something beyond orange dreams and fairy tales daily. may they sink into a sinkhole.
