More on Emory Floyd

Huge pickup for us. Now that he has committed, I can share a few details regarding his recruitment.

First, I work with his father here in the metro Atlanta area. He has kept me updated on his son’s recruitment. Beamer made the “Welcome Home” announcement on Wednesday. The next day, he comes up to me and says “He committed.” So I asked if he’s a Gamecock and he confirmed. So I was really excited and pumped up. I’ve known this Thursday since that this was one of the “Welcome Home” announcements Beamer was referring to but I couldn’t say anything out of respect to Floyd and his family. A few quick things:

—Throughout the recruitment, his dad told me that USC showed the most love and that he really vibed with Beamer because of how genuine and sincere he is. But as much as he liked Beamer, he had to let his son make his own decision.

—He also told me that on Wednesday, Torrian Gray called him and said his son is ready to commit to us. His dad asked if he wanted to think it over through the weekend before committing but Emory was ready to make his decision. Apparently it was the environment and that he felt at home at USC that sold Emory.

—Emory also plans on running track.

Guys, I believe we got ourselves a good one. From what I see in tape, he’s very fast, physical and has great cover skills.

Insider notes on newest baseball commitment

South Carolina picked up a commitment this weekend from RHP Austin Williamson, an instant impact kind of player in the 2022 class.

Williamson was an Alabama commitment and backed off his pledge before committing to South Carolina on July 4. He spoke some with Vanderbilt and Clemson but the main competition was North Carolina but the Gamecocks were Williamson's top choice after de-committing.

While he's from North Carolina, Williamson has family in Columbia and would grow up attending South Carolina football games and knew once he was not committed the Gamecocks would be tough to beat if they ultimately offered. They did, and also hosted Williamson and his family on an unofficial visit recently where he was able to see the schools and facilities.

Williamson actually took an unofficial visit to campus for the NCAA Tournament game against Old Dominion and fell in love with the atmosphere that night. His relationship with pitching coach Skylar Meade was also a big factor in him committing to South Carolina, mentioning Meade was incredibly relatable during the process and built a good relationship with Williamson, which certainly did not hurt the Gamecocks' chances.

As for what Williamson will bring on the field, he's someone who can be an impact guy as part of the class. He's been up to 92 miles per hour on his fastball with a changeup and curveball to go with it. The staff loves his competitiveness and his pitching mechanics, and he's able to locate on both sides of the plate with some good pitch-ability. Plus, as he gets into a collegiate weight room his velocity will go up as well. He's already listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds.

PerfectGame considers him the No. 101 player in the 2022 class and the No. 32 overall pitcher. Right now PerfectGame has South Carolina as the No. 13 class for the 2022 cycle.

Braves versus Marlins 7/04/21 Fireworks Fourth Finale 💥

Welcome to another edition of Gamecock Central Braves Baseball ⚾️ chat 💬. I am your host @Pfunk Cock along with a plethora of regular participants in the chat. The Braves have made a roster change for today as they have recalled Arcia from Gwinnett and he will start in left field today. He has been hitting very well in Gwinnett for awhile and his recall has been impending since he started getting reps in the outfield at Gwinnett. Hopefully he brings that spark to the big club today.

The Braves will throw Charlie Morton today. He has been pitching lights out for the past month and hopefully that magic continues for the finale. He will be opposed by Thomson of the Marlins . He has faced the Braves once and he gave us fits as only Freeman got a hit off him. Hopefully things will change today with the revamped lineup and the later season consistency the Braves hitters have shown as the season has progressed.

Starting Lineup
Acuna RF
Freeman 1B
Albies 2B
Riley 3B
Swanson ss
Heredia CF
Arcia LF
Contreras C
Morton rhp

Inside the commitment - Felix Hixon

The final unaccounted-for "Welcome Home" was revealed today as Georgia defensive tackle Felix Hixon went public with his choice to commit to South Carolina.

The process for Hixon brings to mind that of offensive line pledge Ryan Brubaker in that Hixon was a very early target for this new staff that committed to the Gamecocks - a long-time front-runner - after taking a full slate of official visits.

Shane Beamer actually sent his "Welcome Home" tweet out on social media that corresponded to Hixon on June 23, meaning that the Jackson (Georgia) product made his pledge with an official visit to Virginia still on the books. He followed through with that trip the next weekend, but the Gamecocks were already locked in at that point.

Defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey did the lion's share of the work here and already knew about Hixon dating back to his time as an assistant at Illinois. He built a strong relationship with Hixon quite early, helping Carolina beat out in-state Georgia Tech as well as out-of-state suitors in Illinois, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

With Hixon and fellow defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce now in the boat, the Gamecock staff likely has a couple more slots left for interior defensive linemen in this class.

Wes Mitchell and I scouted Hixon at a Rivals Camp earlier this spring and came away with a positive impression after watching him during the drills and one-on-ones. Both in that setting and on film, Hixon shows impressive power in the upper and lower body. While he will need to refine his technique from a pass-rushing standpoint, he checks some boxes you like to see in an interior lineman who projects as being a solid run-stopper type at the college level.
