    OT: The "Entertainment" Industry

You're comparing the industry from 1993 with the industry as it exists in 2023. Streaming and the gazillion platforms that host it didn't exist in 1993. In 1993, there were about 500 scripted TV shows. Now there are nearly 4000. A lot of the folks who would have been writing movies if the...

    OT: The "Entertainment" Industry

I'm not sure what this list is or how any of it relates to music. Did you just pick out bad movies from 2023 and good ones from 1993? I could do the reverse. 1993 Mr. Nanny Son of the Pink Panther Look Who's Talking Now RoboCop 3 Cop & 1/2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III Weekend at Bernie's II...

I could see a court saying the fact they can't play in a game diminishes their earning power. Who wants a pitch man who doesn't play? But like I said, I'm no Sherman Act expert.

I'm not a Sherman Act expert, but the language used in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the opinion upheld by SCOTUS in Alston has a pretty good explanation: "The treatment of Student-Athletes is not the result of free market competition. To the contrary, it is the result of a cartel of...

The problem is that is player-focused. I think to avoid a Sherman Act violation you have to enact restrictions on the institutions, not the players.

I think the answer may be salary caps. Let the players get whatever they can in NIL money but limit how much a school's "payroll" can be. Would not violate the Sherman Act because it is not done to limit the market rights of the athlete, i.e., restraint of trade, but instead is done to level the...

"NIL was supposed to be centered around jersey sales and video game proceeds," according to sports business reporter Darren Rovell. Instead, it has turned into 'free-market capitalism.'” https://www.ballysports.com/national/news/nil-after-one-year-a-free-for-all-of-free-market-capitalism

And I think that's where we are. College sports as we knew it is dead. We're all processing grief like a beloved family member died. On the positive side bowl season starts today!

What do you suggest that isn't a restraint of trade violative of the Sherman Act? I'm sure the NCAA has top flight lawyers working on it but we're two years in from Alston and eight years in from O'Bannon v. NCAA and so far they've got nothing.

I was commenting on people saying NIL is destroying college sports. I am in agreement that if you sign on you finish. I enforced it with my kids. And I am dumb enough that I would risk injury to get to play one more game at the college level even if it meant hurting my draft stock.

Only because of the manufactured economy that was amateurism. If that was fair payment, there wouldn't be so much more money left over to both pay the athletes and continue to enrich their overlords.

An "amateur" sport that generates billions per year for the people at the top on the backs of free labor. NCAA v. Alston was a 9-0 unanimous opinion written by Gorsuch and joined by, among others, Roberts, Alito, Coney Barrett, and Thomas, with Kavanaugh concurring even more strongly in favor of...

    What to expect this Saturday?

Your punt blocking scares me because we never recovered from the blocked punt against ND. I expect you'll come after every one and may block one or two. But Wes has been dialing up the blitzes lately and I don't see Rattler lighting us up. We're finally healthy in the secondary and Bresee is...
