*** The process of adding a new defensive coach to Shane Beamer's staff continues.
Following the weekend, there's more to report on an interesting candidate that's been involved in some conversations regarding the open position: former Florida linebackers coach Christian Robinson.
Shane Beamer already has plenty of familiarity with Robinson. As a four-star, top 200 prospect out of Norcross High in Georgia in the 2008 class, Beamer recruited Robinson as a Gamecock assistant (Robinson signed with UGA).
There's a Gamecock connection here, too: Christian's father, Gus Robinson, is a Charleston product who was a quality player for South Carolina in the 1980s, finishing his career with 350 career tackles. Christian began his coaching career with graduate assistant stints at Georgia, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State prior to moving on the field full time at Florida in 2018.
A linebacker in college, most of Robinson's experience in coaching is with that position group, although he did work with the Ole Miss defensive line as a grad assistant in 2017.
When Shane Beamer was putting together candidates for a potential initial staff in Columbia, we can tell you that Robinson was a guy that circulated in those conversations, although he didn't end up being an initial target for the first group.
Robinson also had two seasons of carryover on the Florida staff with current Gamecock assistant Torrian Gray in 2019 and 2020.
The Gators have a couple players with Palmetto State ties on the roster: linebacker Tyron Hopper - a player Robinson recruited - and defensive lineman Justus Boone.
