COLUMBIA, S.C. -
South Carolina's
A'ja Wilson was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced today. Her team-best 15.3 points per game helped the Gamecocks to three wins last week, including an 18-point decision over then-No. 12/10 Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena.

Wilson's week included 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game to go with averages of 1.7 assists and 1.3 blocks. She led the team in scoring in both home games. In the win over No. 12/10 Texas A&M, Wilson grabbed six of her nine rebounds in the second half after helping the Gamecocks build their first-half lead with 11 of her team-high 18 points in the opening 20 minutes. Against Alabama, Wilson posted her second-best field goal percentage of the season, hitting 7-of-9 from the field en route to 17 a team-high 17 points. She tied her career high with three assists as well. In the final game of the week, she netted eight of her 11 points in the second half and played a key role in an 8-0 second-half run that put the game out of reach, adding two points, two rebounds and a steal to the effort.

For the season, Wilson is the lone freshman to rank among the SEC's top 20 in both scoring and rebounding. Her 13.7 points per game is ninth-best in the SEC, as is her 7.0 rebounding average. Among the nation's most efficient freshmen, Wilson is third in the SEC in field goal percentage, hitting 51.4 percent of her shots.

No. 1/1 South Carolina continues a three-game road swing at No. 21/20 Georgia on Thu., Feb. 5, in a 7 p.m. tipoff on the SEC Network. The Gamecocks are back at Colonial Life Arena the following week, hosting LSU on Thu., Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.

I don't expect they'll have a problem. It seems like the top 10 WBB teams are far above the competition.

Every game we play on the road is a trap game with the possible exception of UCONN, but I agree, UGA can be real tough in Athens. We'll need to bring our top game for this one.

Trap game? Not to me. We may lose, but it won't be because we are looking past this game to another. It's not like we're going on the road to play Elon or something. Georgia is a rival, ranked, and undefeated at home. Can't imagine we would over look, or look past all that. JMHO.

I think Ole Miss was a wake up game. The ladies came out flat and were hacked and fouled trying to get them off their game. It worked for a while then the little spark plug took over. Unless they get railed by lousy SEC refs, they should be up for the task.

Maybe it is a trap game by definition, but IMO, this game is more important than UConn. With UT breathing down our necks for the SEC, and a 1-seed in play, we need to win the conference. You can't get any titles for beating UConn in a regular season matchup.

exactly. Win them both and then fill up the CLA for the remainder of our games (and the 1st & 2nd rounds).

completely agree. I noticed ESPN started running the trailer for USC at Connecticut and thought "here we go" with the media and publicity to attract the novice fans around the country. I'm confident Coach Staley has her team insulated from the noise - while deserving and embracing the stage. I just thought I'd throw something out to the board that isn't about Terrell Owens Jr committing to LSU.

It has already been an historic season for the Gamecocks and it doesn't appear Dawn and the team is anywhere near done with Tampa being the ultimate prize.

We will go undefeated. Then probably play UCONN for the title. Could we be the next UCONN under Staley?

Only losing by 20 in Storrs would be a success. UCONN is on another level.

Oh, ouch, Dookie. Blue much? ;-) You may be right, but you may

not. I think it breaks down the middle right now, and we're taking them one game at a time.

GOCOCKS! BEATARK! BEATUGA!
