We’re officially back to being the 3rd best FBS team in SC. Just 6 years ago Coastal was losing the Big South to Charleston Southern (coached at the time by Jamey Chadwell BTW). Crazy how quick things change.

Give it a rest please....the SEC is a much different animal.....keep thinking that chadwell would come here and win multiple SEC championships.....no coach can do that here.

And yet, nobody has hired this coach. Must be something we don't know about him 🤔.
Success at one level doesn't automatically transfer to a higher level job.

This is an example of how winning leads to recognition-even if the competition is weak.

We would beat the current Coastal team by 21. Especially with McCall out.

How exactly do you arrive at this conclusion?

Limited comparatives:
~ Coastal had over 200 more yards in their victory against GA State. We had less total yards than GA State.
~ Coastal beat App State who beat A&M on their home field. We were handled 17pts in the first two minutes which we used to get by A&M.

Regardless, the fact that their coach has a widely undertalented team even in the conversation of being comparable to ours is telling.

What could he do with our talent is the big question.

Good point. And pretty much every coach coming to USC is going to have that hanging question regardless of their origin.

It feels like Gregg Marshall when he was at Winthrop. Potential major coaching talent in our backyard but we choose to outsmart ourselves during hires.

If by outsmart you mean take the advise of a bunch of former players who btw knew nothing about anyone outside of the program, yeah... we outsmarted ourselves. 😉

McCall out for 4-6 weeks . Maybe this question will get settled in Birmingham where some writers project us to be in a bowl game with Coastal. At that point they better hope they have McCall back!

IMO, if Chadwell were the coach of University of Toledo, more USC fans would view him as a potential savior and one of the hottest unknown coaches in the country. It's the fact he's from USC Jr. which changes the perception.

What talent?

Grayson McCall is miles better than Spencer Rattled. This is a no brainer. Projected second round NFL pick. And he can still play one more year at Coastal.

Coastal's RB stable of Reese White, Bennett, Bedgood and CJ Easley as a group are better. They even won 7 games with their 4th string RB due to injuries. Reese White and especially Braydon Bennett can play in the NFL.

WR Jared Brown is faster than any receiver on this team. He lit App St up with 84 yds rushing on just 3 attempts, and 80 yds receiving. Only a freshman already have NFL scouts following him. WR Sam Pinckney is on the 2022
Fred Biletnikoff Watch List. At 6'5" he can play at the next level. Also had an offer from USC.

You want to compare OL? No comparison. I'll take Coastal's front 5. They are undersized but get after it. Most are former high school wrestlers with a mean streak. Leverage, quickness and execution. They absolutely manhandled that huge defensive front four vs #8 BYU in 2020 rushing for close to 300 yds.

Our team is performing like a mid-level Sunbelt team. Coastal is an elite sunbelt team. So makes sense Coastal surpasses us in National Rankings.

I can’t say we would surely beat them if we played this season. I think we would beat them on a good day. But I wouldn’t bet money on us winning that one. Unfortunately.

SEC football is exciting. But I think Carolina football would be more of a thrill to watch if we were in the Sunbelt. We wouldn’t get blown out and the games would be competitive. I know USC can win in the SEC. It’s not a curse. It’s probably not even Beamer. It’s bad leadership at the VERY top.

I just don’t think we will ever have the leadership to be competitive in the SEC. Tanner should have been fired two years ago. Even the State Gov’t tried to oust the USC BOT for incompetence.

I need a drink!

Why not? He did exactly that at a D2, FCS and FBS programs, all had been average programs before that. All within this state too.

Thats one problem in the USC fan universe. We sometimes think “the SEC” is so elite that all newcomers just get eaten alive. Well Josh Heupel hasnt been. Brian Kelly did great. Missouri won the East more times than USC, Vandy ans Kentucky combined in their first what, 2-3 years?

Hes young. His trajectory:
Player at ETSU late 90s (when Satterfield was there w him)
FCS Assistant/OC Charleston Southern, won 2005 conference championship
D2 HC North Greenville mid/late 2000s won conference championships made playoffs
FCS HC Charleston Southern 2013-2016 won 2x conference championships, made playoffs, won playoff games, top 10 FCS rankings (btw CSU was 1-11 in 2011, he did that turnaround)
FCS-FBS transition OC/HC at Coastal, 2017, has won Sun Belt, hosted College GameDay, surpassed USC as 2nd best FBS team in SC

He is only like 45 I think. His career trajectory is right on track for the P5 job now

What makes you say that? Yes having McCall out would hurt. We beat UK bc their QB was out

But healthy Coastal vs healthy USC….Coastal by 3.

The SEC has some good football teams, but this idea that somehow the SEC is different and superior to any other leagues is delusional. The SEC goes after the same recruits as every other school. Remove a handful of schools from the SEC and you’re left with a league comparable to the Sunbelt Conference.

It is the toughest league but you’re right, it’s usually because of a handful of NFL players on the teams. Its not like its the literal NFL vs D2 colleges.

USC fans have got to get over this coping mechanism of “we’re in the SEC” to accept mediocre decisions from Ray Tanner
