5 SEC teams in New years day bowls

That's the proliferation of New Year's Day Bowls. There used to only be four in all.

Good news for everybody in the conference. More money to split up for everyone
Especially since Ole Miss will not be able to earn a split of the proceeds due to their self-imposed bowl ban.

The postseason ban forces Ole Miss to forfeit its annual portion of the SEC’s postseason revenue, which is $7.8 million.

Still shows that he SEC is still a very good conference. Most talking heads say that the SEC is way down. The people in charge of picking teams for the bowls disagree.

Bowl berths are locked in by conference, although bowls might pass on a school to take another one in the same conference. It's just a matter of having enough bowl-eligible teams to fill the spots. As for the SEC, after the top three teams, the SEC falls back to the pack. LSU loses at home to Troy? UT goes 4-8? Florida is terrible? Arkansas not a bowl team. Vandy falling back farther after a good start. Come on, now. Four coaching changes due to less than acceptable performance, another due to NCAA issues from which Ole Miss will be years recovering. There's still work to be done below the top. There's "not as good" and then there's bad. Too much bad in the SEC among programs that ought to be better. The SEC needs to show out in the bowl season. Then we might be able to claim some conference redemption.

But LSU turned their season around. Played well after. Most coaching changes have been good for the conference. Yes, I love the SEC but teams are still good. Don't most conferences fall off after the top three or four?

Hope the SEC does play well.

Happy to have our team be one of those playing on January first!

For the love of pete...Vandy started playing conference games and they started losing. When two team in the same conference play, one team loses and another one wins. When was this golden era of SEC football where every team went 7-1 and no coaches were ever fired?

The coaching carousel never spun like this. For years, the SEC kicked the ACC's @$$ and it wasn't close. That disparity has tightened in the most recent four years (the CFP era) and that is significant because it is the other Power-Five conference that plays in the South. Too many losses to them in rivalries and even in bowls. The league has slipped and only it's staunchest fans don't see it. It is an almost universal theme among the national media. Some redemption is possible in the postseason and it needs to happen. The brand needs some refurbishing.

2005 and 2015, say hi...

The fact that we're going to our New Year's Day bowl as an unranked team does tend to underscore King Ward's point that the luster of the "New Year's Day" designator for bowls isn't what it used to be. Having said that, the New Year's Day bowls are still, collectively, the best group of bowls, so it's a testament to the SEC's passionate fan following that the conference is able to lock in quality bowl tie-ins.

I'm going to hold off on crowing about the SEC's bowl games until I see how we do in them. Hopefully, we'll be able to tout 4 or 5 New Year's Day _WINS_.
