Thursday’s practice was a light one as USC prepares to take on S.C. State tomorrow night at 7:00 P.M. The primary emphasis was on special teams. They worked on blocking assignments, maintaining lanes on punt coverage, etc… all in an effort to correct some of the special teams issues they’ve had early on this season. If things don’t improve it won’t be because they didn’t put in the time in practice.

This is going to be the game in many ways that determines which freshmen will play this year and which ones will redshirt. The freshmen receivers received a lot of reps yesterday, as the coaches are trying to determine which ones can be counted on and which ones can’t be. There is still a lot of inconsistency from the young guys. One of them will make a great catch on play and then forget their blocking assignment on the next. It just hasn’t all come together mentally for them as of yet. The talent is there, though. It should just be a matter of time before the light comes on for at least a couple of them.

Some believe the offense is a couple of wide receivers away from really taking off and becoming what most expected when Spurrier took the job. Right now, the lack of other receivers besides McKinley is having a significant impact on the offense as a whole.

I hear coach Hunt isn’t letting his offensive line rest on their laurels after some early season success. He has turned up the intensity and his expectation level and is working his group very hard.

Not sure what this means as of yet, but tight end Weslye Saunders has spent some time on the scout team this week.
