An awful way to open the football season....Thursday game in Charlotte against the Tar Holes

with no postseason baseball the Dark Territory this season is going to be intolerable

I hope this series dies. I really don't understand why we did it given they won't play us in basketball.

If I thought Charlotte was an enthsiastic host to Gamecock sports, I might feel better about the venue, but we simply don't count in the minds of Charlotteans - which is not good for either party. We're the closest major college FOOTBALL program to the border city, but imo they seem to have a wall running along the state line - nice city, weird people. This 'neutral' site thing simply leaves both parties unfulfilled.

Charlotte thinks of themselves as a "pro" town but there is not doubt as to the slant of the Charlotte media toward the tarheels

I just don't like Thursday night games period.

as a general rule i don't either, but I do like the idea that we have become the sort of "traditional" team that plays in the first game of the year. for any one of us that complains about the fact that we don't have the "tradition" of the Alabamas and Ohio States of the world, we have that.

Like it or not, we gotta suck it up and show up. Lots of good recruits in Charlotte. Biggest city within 2 hours of Columbia. Success in the SEC means recruiting your area better than anyone.

...can't get much more un-appealing than that.

Would you rather open with Wofford at home, like Clemson? I like seeing us play Power 5 (if the ACC still qualifies) conference OOC opponents. High risk, high reward games.

Tiger fan here - I will be pulling hard for ya'll in this game. I am not huge SC fan - never have been, never will be - BUT I do have repsect for the program and its lack of hypocrisy. UNC on the other makes my stomach turn. After all the dirt that has come out it is certainly entertaining to engage a Tarheel fan regarding the "Carolina Way." It is my hope and expection that ya'll will break your foot off in the their behinds. Cocks by 21.

Honestly I feel better about opening in Charlotte against the Holes than a home opener with Wofford. That's a dangerous game especially in an opener and they give us fits whenever we play them. I'd rather let the taters deal with that bunch and that crazy offense.

Good post.

The bloom is off the rose on the First Thursday thing. I wish we would do what so many others do and just start the season with a Saturday mid-major non-conference game. The First Thursday thing was cool the first 10 times or so, but I don't see what it's gaining us anymore.

The Thursday night thing is becoming more of a tradition thing for us! If you think about....WE open up the college football season every year!

This is true. Plus, SOS likes the earlier start since it gives us a few more days to prepare for the next opponent and, hopefully, iron out some issues from the opening game.

Now, if the Charlotte media would give the game some decent publicity instead of the usual wide-eyed reaction we've always gotten, i.e. 'Who ARE those guys?' Unfortunately, for our program, our nearest (and very near, at that) major city (Charlotte) is no Atlanta. Atlanta is a college football (SEC) town - something Charlotte will never be. Too many sippers (Blue Babies).

Playing a big opponent on opening Thursday includes a tremendous amount of pressure. Seemingly every year we play unevenly that first week, as many teams do. But, since it's a Thursday and everyone is watching, we always get a good dose of criticism for how we play. A few years ago we went up to Vandy and barely sneaked by them on opening Thursday and we were so roundly criticized and dismissed after that that it was late in the season before anyone noticed we had a decent team.

By comparison, if say, Michigan State (just throwing a random team out here) plays its first game on Saturday, and wins a lackluster 24-17 game over Troy, the criticism and nitpicking are way less, because that game will be buried amongst all the other Saturday games.

Mid majors are too expensive now. It's good for recruiting win or lose. All the big boys do it. Whether you like the panthers or not is irrelevant. Even if we lose it changes nothing about our season. If things go south it could be the difference between Birmingham and the Cuba bowl but at that point who cares.

Fact is, playing in Charlotte is good for business.

From a UK fan that lives in Columbia, I always cheer for USC against anyone but the Cats. In saying that, I really hope you beat the Tar out of the Holes!

Can't wait to watch!!!!!

"Beat the tar out of the Holes." Good one. I have never seen that before.
USC wins easily as the team and FB staff have a lot to prove after A&M last year.
Hopefully the scandal at UNC will be gaining even more attention and their FB team will not have its mind on the game.

Thats UNCheata from now on.......Hey we could say we showed up for the game an won....Its the way UNCheata does things.....lol
