Art Baker, Sumter native and legendary coach at Furman, The Citadel, East Carolina, dies

Baker was a decorated coach and a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame.

Never played for him, but played against him. He was a great competitor and coach. In later years I sat with him on occasion at the McGuire Room before USC basketball games and had some great conversations with him. He was a fixture in SC for both HS and college football. He will be missed greatly.

I spoke with him about a year ago at the State House. He looked great then for his age. Several of my friends played for him at Eau Claire. What a legend in SC sports and one fine man. He will be remembered.
