Even after the all time historic defensive downfall this past season, not hiring Muschamp had to be the biggest letdown for me. Would absolutely love to know what the real story was behind our approach, or lack thereof, to hiring him.
Not a fair comment.
He's an incredible defensive coach and recruiter - he's relentless from what the recruiting folks say- and Auburn is absolutely rocking it right now to close out the recruiting season.

Spurrier wanted to keep coaches until signing day, so we could keep recruits who were recruited by (and had a relationship with) Ward. That worked out great, didn't it?Originally posted by coastguardcock:

Yea they are killing it, they sign Tega and he is the only DE they were able to get. We did so terrible by just getting 6 DE's in this classOriginally posted by jackrabbit slim:
Just got the Prince Tega guy. Yeah, ol Malzhan looks like a genius right about now. Jesus Steve.
Their class is ranked higher than ours
and Will is in on a 5 star defensive end - which is more than we can say.

Yeah, Auburn sucked it up before Muschamp got there. That is the difference - lol.Originally posted by jackrabbit slim:

Not far comment? Why on earth people on here have been kissing muschump and lawing's jock for years. I don't get it. They both were at UF and ran the program in the ground. Period end of story.Originally posted by Rollerdude123:

Same folks who want EJ back, even though he has been fired from his last 2 coaching jobs.Originally posted by jeff2001:

I'm not kissing anything. That's a stupid comment.
He wasn't a good head coach. He's a great defensive coach and recruiter in that role. That's obvious- ask any head coach about his recruiting record and resume.
Just like Spurrier wasn't a good head coach in the pro game - doesn't mean he's not a good coach in the college game.

your missing it. yes i would agree that the overall program went right off a cliff but 1 their defense stayed strong the entire time (practically their only strength. conveniently enough that's what we'd use them for and 2 nobody here is saying give them the reigns to the offense or our overall program.Originally posted by jeff2001:

I hope that's not true. We don't really know what happened but there was an awful lot of smoke without a fire. If we could have gotten WM, it would have reenergized the fanbase and potential recruits.Originally posted by basses:
If the HBC hadn't been so stubborn, arrogant and lazy, we could have had Muschamp. No he wants to stay with the loser we have. 6-6 or 5-7 this year and struggle to beat a crappy Vandy.

We are a good school with nice facilities.
When you add an average recruiting effort to that- you get decent recruiting classes.
That means you miss out on a lot of the very top players- but land some nice players that aren't at the elite level.
At South Carolina, for us to land a few of those elite players every few years - it takes a concentrated recruiting effort where everyone is on the same page 365 days a year and your program is built around selling a theme to recruits.
It means your head coach doesn't come out in late December making silly, unnecessary statements that lead people to believe he may leave in a few years.

It's good we got six defensive ends since we appeared to have about half of one last year. This recruiting season they hemoraghed defensive backs and offensive linemen. How do you miss your first choices in whole categories of players year after year?
To answer a dumb question. Muschamp may not have been a good head coach but he is a da@# good defensive coordinator and lots better then what we have. Just wait and see how crumby Ward is again this year.Originally posted by skinner63:
If Muschamp was so darn good at recruiting .....how in the heck did get fired in Fla. when they have the greatest number of recruits to choose from in the nation? Oh wait, Auburn has been recruiting top rated teams before Muschamp even stepped on the campus there. Never mind.
If the HBC hadn't been so stubborn and arrogant in refusing to listen to our fans, we would have been 6- or 6-7 every year he has been here.Originally posted by basses:

Muschamp recruited extremely well, as in Top 5, Top 10 classes during his time at UF. They were way down this year for the obvious reasons of his expected and eventual firing. The man can recruit and coach defense and his record speaks volumes, he's just a terrible HC.
I would think any program that could get Muschamp would drool all over themselves to get him.
