Beamer on BoBo

With apologies to Insider and Jackson Fields from which I cut this statement but I'm fairly sure this will be "the shot heard round the gamecock world" across social media in about five minutes. (Join Insider for official scoop, its worth it)


Says he's glad they were able to keep Mike Bobo around. Says proven SEC coordinators with a track record of success are hard to find. He says Mike Bobo would've been his first call for OC if he hadn't been on staff at South Carolina. Says his offense at Oklahoma is very similar to Bobo's offense and they plan on keeping some elements of his offense along with some "cutting-edge" stuff from what they were doing at Oklahoma.

So, truth, spin or as common today, some of both? Beamer will have a challenge standing his ground to Bobo, but this provides some suggestion he can do it, perhaps. Pulling for him.

Spin cycle in full effect here. Bobo isn’t a bad coordinator but he will never be confused with Lincoln Riley. Beamer had to keep Bobo, part of the deal to get this job and keep the financials where the AD wants them.

If Bobo were making $250k per year, he’d be long gone...bank on it.

Exactly. I’m not sure how you even spin this. He’s trying but he is failing big time. This is a train wreck from the get go. This is not good. I’m rooting for him but this is a bad look.

Bobo and Friend were at UGA and CSU together. Friend and Rocker worked together twice before. Beamer and Rocker worked together at UGA. The four coaches retained all have at least one year together and it was said that the only coach Beamer didn’t have a relationship was Mike Peterson.

...all of that and it would be easy to guess the next 3 hires will have some relationship as well.

Take the optimistic route because your skepticism seems unreasonable (to me).

He set that expectation during his press conferences. I too was excited about the prospects. The optics on this are very bad and it will take some time to recover from this debacle. Now everything he says going forward will be viewed under a microscope. This is not how you build trust in a program.

Haven't really thought about it. Still not crazy about the HC hire, much less the underwhelming staff choices. I think Bobo is a fine OC though. He was pretty sought after before he became a head coach and he knows offense and has some solid philosophies. I'd love to play for the guy.

Not gonna lie ... this was very disappointing. I think Bobo did an average to Good job but nothing about Mike Bobo as an OC is going to inspire elite WR’s and playmakers to consider USC . It’s just a bad decision plain and simple .

Well, if he didn't out and out lie, no one would call him a liar. If Bobo was choice 1, there were ZERO reasons to delay naming him the OC. Instead, several other coaches were hired before that announcement was made. Why? Because they were looking for another OC and didn't get it. Bobo was not the OC they chose, he was the OC chosen by circumstances for them. To release a statement to the contrary a month after being hired as HC is disingenuous and dishonest.

How can you not like Bobo. He called the plays based on our personnel. We had one WR that would have been a backup on most SEC teams. No other reliable WR. So what plays was he suppose to call. I think as we develop and recruit better players the play calling would be better. At CSU offense wasn't Bobo's issue. It was defense. He had a balanced attack, but he also attacked down field.

None of the former players have to play for Bono! However some current players were unwilling to play under him in the bowl game ! This should have told you all you needed to know ! Beamer had to clean house and start fresh and has failed to do so ! He said and I quote “ I have coordinators from all over the country calling about coming to South Carolina “. Actually the two offenses were very similar. They had an oline and receivers though. And a D that didn’t surrender 50 ppg.

He very well could have come in and said something like, "When I got to USC they already had an exceptional coordinator in Mike Bobo. I believe in the direction he's taking the offensive..."

Instead he came out and told us something that's blatantly not true. Like I said, that's a decision Beamer made and it isn't a good start to his career as our HC.

Oklahoma is polar opposite , 4-5 wide spread formations with the intention of spreading the defense out in order to run ! Huge differences ! I can’t answer for CSB, but I can speculate. When the call in shows start, you can ask, but IMHO....

1) Bobo is already under contract for next year, so there’s no pressure to announce he’s returning when we’re in a recruiting dead period.

2) He very well may have let Bobo decompress a bit, talk to his family, look at his options, and allow him to decide whether he wanted to return or explore the openings he was linked to at Kentucky and Auburn.

I certainly don’t see it as CSB “lying to our faces”.

I think he, as well as Bobo fully understand the challenges we’re going to face upgrading our offense, and he was affording Bobo the professional courtesy to decide which path he wanted to follow.

I laughed at earlier post where people had these expectations of bringing in some world class coordinators. The Bobo hired surprised me, but as I said before, what is there at USC at the moment to attract top talent. People sai “money.” Money isn’t everything when it could come at the expense of destroying your reputation and may be the last money you ever make coaching football. Build it and they will come. Show a coach that Carolina isn’t a graveyard and then look for top tier coaches.

Agree. 100%.....We have some big keyboard warriors in here to say the least. Last I checked CB doesn't need to explain his actions or thinking to any of us. He has a job to do and is doing it. Do why did it take 3 weeks to say Bobo was the OC moving forward...maybe Bobo wanted to entertain other offers before deciding what's best for him and his family.

No one said it’s an overnight change.

But if we’re able to pick up 2-3 WR’s in the portal, it’s a start.

To think Bobo can only run one type of offense is wrong. He said at the beginning of the year that he would not beat his head against the wall trying to fit the current players in a system that isn't going to work for them. He has coached multiple styles of offense. His 2018 team at CSU had a receiver that caught 94 passes and another that caught 54. We had one wide receiver this year... one. What scheme do you run with that? Run the ball? Well, had our first 1000 yard rusher in a while. Bobo was not the problem. Not by a long shot.
