Beamer

Blame Ray! He hire Beamer because Beamer "wanted to be here".
Now look where it got us.

I can admit when I am wrong. I thought Beamer was a bad hire due to his limited experience, never a head coach, never a coordinator. I have seen a passion to succeed in Coach Beamer that I never saw in Woods, Scott, Holtz, Spurrier, and Muschamp. Spurrier was fantastic but recruiting was not his favorite part of being a head coach. Beamer is attending to every detail and putting in the work.

I’d stick to his initial contract but just with more incentives.

I'm always a fan of making coaching contracts heavily incentive based.

But in the end, the salary doesn't really matter, a couple or a few million a year doesn't amount to much for the school. Just keep the buyout reasonable. We've been stupid about that recently.

Indeed. I will give Beamer credit that he's shown he can put together a quality team.

Now he's going to have to prove he can get the right coaches and win the big games with them.

Then you’ll say he has to win NC to prove himself, then multiple NC, then…. I doubt Beamer gives a rats ass if you give him credit or not.

I hope the contract has a low buyout for the university. These buyouts have gotten out of hand. Makes it hard to fire a coach and no telling what could happen 4-5 years down the road. Jimbo’s buyout should have taught everybody a lesson.

Agreed. I said before, upping a salary is nothing as long as we stay reasonable with the buyout.

I am glad more thinking goes into the coach of the year award than just winning 12 games and going undefeated. Otherwise, it would be an award that was simply won by looking at a record.

This is especially significant for our coach given that most people felt like 6-7 wins was the top possible.

Some folks want to hate on our coach just because

We happen to have a coach that enthusiastically wants to be the head coach at South Carolina (a rare thing for our school)

and a coach that is and wants to be part of the community- and does all sorts of little things to support the school and fans- and pays out of his own pocket to support our band going on a trip-

and does every media and website interview asked of him- with a smile on his face - when our previous 3 head coaches hated doing them with a passion.

oh, and he just won 9 games with a chance at 10 wins and beat Clemson for the 2nd time on the road.

and some aren't happy and can't enjoy living in the moment at all.

Clark Lea was the actual coach of the year.

He was selected as a coach of the year.

So was Beamer.

Only one of those is also up for a national coach of the year. It's not Clark Lea who won 6 games and lost at home badly to Shane Beamer.
Only one was voted coach of the year by his peers.

They lost their last 3 games and 4 of the last 5. Limping to the end of the season.
He won it by beating Alabama at home when people thought Alabama was a top 3 team.

The irony is not wanting to give Lea credit for the job he did this year.

Lea did a good job, but I don't think he did enough. No matter what, the Bama win was impressive considering the talent gap.

For me, I typically consider how many games you won that you weren't expect win, and how many you lost that you were expected to lose. Mostly based on the amount of talent on the teams. The bar for Vandy is really low using that method, since they aren't really expected to beat anybody.

Lea beat 4 teams that he wasn't expected to beat. But lost one that he was expected to win. A bad loss at home against Georgia St.
Beamer beat 4 teams that he wasn't expected to beat. And didn't lose to anybody that he was expected to beat.

Head to head when comparing the two doesn't really mean that much to me because we had the talent to beat Vandy, so we should have beaten them.

But overall, I think Beamer did the better job.

I'm happy to give him credit for beating Bama. That was a great win. The Ga. State loss was a pretty bad loss too.

A close loss to Texas was a good game. But it was a loss.

But I don't typically offer a lot of credit to coaches for winning 6 games and losing 4 of the last 5. Seems odd to offer much credit to a team that blew what could have been a really season.

Good season for Vandy? yes

Great season? no.

I think he’ll be looking for a huge pay increase. He may want to be here but there are now many other schools that are willing to pay him him huge dollars.

Are there? I hadn't seen anything, but rumors are hard document. And he has stated repeatedly that he really wants to be here.

He should get a pay raise, we can afford it. As long as we stay sane with the buyout.
