** South Carolina has worked itself into a strong position with Cincinnati (Oh.) St. Xavier three-star quarterback Chase Wolf as he prepares to release his top five soon. Wolf has already said that South Carolina, Boston College and Cincinnati will make the top five when he releases it. The 6-foot-2, 193-pounder has already visited South Carolina and plans to visit three of his top schools again to take another look before making a decision. South Carolina feels good about its position with Wolf. Again, South Carolina plans to take two quarterbacks. Here's a look at Wolf's highlights. As you can see, he's comfortable moving around in the pocket and throwing on the run.
Las Vegas (Nev.) Bischop Gorman four-star quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson told Chris Clark that he'll visit South Carolina for the first time on Wednesday. Thompson-Robinson is thought to be leaning to UCLA, but also has Michigan high on his list and is one of Michigan's top targets at the position.
That's worth keeping an eye on because Michigan is also a new offer for South Carolina three-star quarterback target Tyler Shough. The Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton prospect, you'll remember, visited Carolina for the spring game and had a great trip, giving me the impression that Carolina had the lead at the time. We mentioned that Shough's recruitment would probably take off and days later Michigan extended an offer. Michigan is an intriguing offer for Shough because his dad is from the state and he actually grew up a fan of the school.
I continue to feel really good about South Carolina's position with Fort Dorchester (S.C.) four-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner. At this point, I think the most likely scenario at quarterback is for Carolina to land Joyner and one out of Wolf and Shough.
** Speaking of quarterbacks, earlier this spring, I asked quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper what he looks for when evaluating a QB. Here's his answer:
"Most of the evaluation process starts with film, so the first thing you look at are physical skills and you try to find a guy that is accurate, a guy that has -- this is a big man's game -- so a big guy, a guy that has the athleticism it play the game. So accuracy, size, athleticism -- that's the first thing that jumps out at you that you can evaluate off the tape.
"Then you have to take the time to get to know the guy. Is football important to him? More than just gameday. Will he like the process of being a quarterback and all the time you have to spend on your own in the film room and all of those things? And then I'm looking for a guy that I can trust. A guy that's going to be a good decision-maker in all aspects of his life."
** Melbourne (Fla.) Holy Trinity four-star running back.athlete Jashaun Corbin will visit South Carolina this evening after visiting Clemson during the day today. The 6-foot-1, 186-pounder was recently given his fourth star on Rivals and will get his first look at the Carolina program today. Heading into today's visits, FSU is considered the public favorite with Notre Dame, Michigan and Florida also in the mix.
** Gaffney (S.C.) three-star wide receiver Dennis Smith landed an offer from Florida State over the weekend and that's a dream school for the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder. FSU is in on a number of top wide receivers, but if Smith is a take for the Noles, then that's where I'd expect him to end up. If not, then South Carolina, Duke and Clemson would all be back in it. But right now, I'd definitely give FSU the edge.
** Based on info from several different sources, I believe that former TL Hanna four-star DL Stephon Wynn has a top three of Georgia, South Carolina and Clemson, in that order. I had previously said that I expected Wynn to end up "in-state" based on hearing that he didn't want to go far from home, but given than Athens is less than an hour and a half from Anderson, then Georgia's current position doesn't really break that mold. Wynn's recruitment has featured a couple of different shifts, so that's not to say that order stands, but it's safe to say he's not the lock to Clemson that he once appeared to be.
** Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy three-star tight end Gavin Schoenwald is a prospect we continue to track where South Carolina is concerned and the 6-foot-5, 220-pounder is fresh off a trip to Auburn this past weekend before seeeing Ole Miss this Thursday and Duke on the 20th. Schoenwald, who has taken multiple South Carolina visits, says he also plans to be back in Columbia soon.
** The same is true for Cornelius (N.C.) Hough class of 2019 wide receiver Nolan Groulx who is currently on his spring break and is working out the details for another visit to Columbia soon. Groulx took a visit earlier this spring and landed an offer from the Gamecocks. He's a top target for the staff in that class.
