I didn't hear any of Coach Martin's hour long press conference.
Can anyone summarize it please?

Super, super short/condensed cliffs:

Coach Martin feels really, really good.
Last year (apparently in addition to covid) he had some sort of bout of arthritis to the point he couldn't grip a basketball.
He likes the air about the new roster - guys, especially the transfers, are excited to be there.
He feels there's already a trust amongst the players, and trust between them and himself - something that was missing, especially toward the end, last season.

He was pretty positive and mostly laid-back. Did have a couple of moments of being irritated that people last year were critical of him and the team. Cited that, prior to last year, we'd had the best 6yr run in school history, etc. But thankfully, didn't dwell on that (negative) sentiment too much.

Early on, I was a big CFM supporter/defender. He lost me last season, totally. But dang, he can win a press conference!!! After watching, and considering the new roster with some promising talent, he's about to suck me back in. I'm actually fairly interested to see what this team can do this upcoming season!

Yeah, my take is he is the head coach of USC MBB so I support him fully. That said, this year will play out as the year that decides his future in Cola. One way or the other.

He almost certainly should have been fired, and it will be an up-hill climb to make the tournament this year, but how he completely flipped the roster is fairly impressive. And he had his first solid recruiting class in years.

We’ll see what he does. Chico Carter and Devin Carter seem legit. Reese can play. Bryant can do his slash and kick thing. Just needs some decent production in the front court. And not get bogged down playing guys who are killing the team— like Couisnard last year. Way too much quality depth for that.

We’ll know pretty quick. Martin’s teams foul way too much and turn the ball over way too much. See that in the OOC and listen to his excuses, and we’ll know it’s another lost year.

Get the feeling that Martin's perspective changed last year - He needs the job now more than the job needs him.

Maybe that will translate into better results. We'll see. I'm glad he knows he doesn't have much more room for error. Any Final Four fumes have been exhausted.

Its a good blend of returning veterans and newcomers, but overall it's a brand new team and a brand new chapter of development. And thus saying that, I expect there to be either poor defensive effort, because the team hasn't learned Martin's way of coaching yet, or there will be LOTS of fouling, because the team has learned Martin's ways, but haven't gotten it down yet and are trying too hard.

Lets just face it: Frank Martin's signature of very physical defense. It's a style of defense that can get sloppy at times when the team is new to learning it, or aren't good fixes for that style of play. Which seems to be some 60-70% of the teams Martin has had at USC.

His style is to ugly down the games with that defense - fans of opponents have always bemoaned losing to Martin's teams at USC by saying "we played a bad game", "we didn't have our A-Game", but more likely it was the Gamecock's style of physical defense that made them play badly.

The question is, will this ONCE AGAIN whole new batch of players going to gel together quickly and play together on the same page with Martin's style, and balance it with consistent athletic offense?? We saw what happens when the team buys in fully - both the 15-16 and 16-17 seasons were the best examples of Martin's defenses clicking efficiently, and they were among the nations' best.

But those two teams were also among the most seasoned, veteran teams Martin has ever had at USC, full of upperclassmen who spent their entire careers at USC under Frank. He had a team like that last season, but it imploded. We'll have a number of veterans this season in Bryant, Couisnard, and Leveque, but mostly a whole new team. They generally been sloppy on defense in past iterations.....

Totally agree with those who pointed out how good Frank is at the pre-season presser. About 3 years ago, I decided to no longer buy what he’s selling at the microphone. Time to put up or shut up.

Now, he’s correct that the previous 6 years qualify among the schools best, but it’s easy to pick and choose which numbers you want to focus on. He didn’t mention that he has 1 NCAA trip in a decade, while being one of the 25 highest paid coaches in the country (I think…could be wrong on that )

But USC basketball history is lousy in the tournament . We only been to the tournament 6 times .

We foul to much because most of our guys haven't been quick enough to play Martin's "in your jersey" style of defense.

I dont think we will see different results from last year. He will scream at the players and they will tell him F%^k off…season over. He can’t coach or recruit.
for the team I hope I’m wrong.

I wish I did not have to wait until the season to know what kind of team we are going to have. I just don't think there is another way to determine if we will be competitive.

If Coach can land some more of the elite in state talent in 22-23 and 23-24 classes, we could quickly become very good.

This is fair.

He’s lost me, but not like Chump did

I am tired of his life lesson schtick and his general jack arsery on the sideline.

So, I hope he catches at least a spark in the bottle this year.

I hope we can see changes for the better in style and substance.

If not, he’ll always have the “best 6-year run ever” plaque he can have engraved at the store where MusChump got his “best first 3 years ever” award.

I’m sure Magoo the AD will even pay for the engraving. It’s the least he could do.

The new team will be future transfers. I'm mean almost all of out team from last year are now out.

That would indeed be the least shocking of all things that could potentially happen.

We still don't have that "leader/floor general, etc.........., go to guy. Unless this changes and we get back to the you can't shoot 3s all over us and we protect the rim.

Not to mention we try to have some sort of post game versus our chuck a 3 approach.

Then we might stay in some games and collect a few more wins of note. I have NEVER (King, I said never) been so underwhelmed to see a season start. I feel bad for feeling such a way about my school but this continued ........(insert your adjective here)........ just has me tired and numb beyond that guy carrying a clip board and Kirby's coffee at UghA.

It's another rebuild. Again. It'll play out like another rebuild. Then we get to hear Martin complain that we don't appreciate him enough. Whatever. The only reason he didn't get fired is that we didn't want a food fight with the legislature when we needed funding for the med school.

I liked what I heard from the presser where Martin said that in meetings after the season they decided they needed shooters. The intelligence level in the basketball office is off the charts to figure out that glaring deficiency

It is easier said than done. An athletic young man who can also shoot, is normally a 4* player.

Now, Devin Carter is a legit 4*, and Zachary Davis has the potential (easily) to have been an underrated 4*, Jacobi Wright could easily be underrated.

If we can only learn quickly to play defense at a high level and Coach stays healthy, we can be competitive.

What does the coach staying healthy got to do with it? He can make as many bad decisions healthy as he does sick. In fact there was less screaming when he was sick. Only 3 or 4 of his players returning says it all.
