Come out for big boat parade on Lake Murray Sunday.

Lake Murray is around 354 ft at its deepest, which is close to the dam. I thought Jocassee was as deep as 700 ft in places, but looked it up, not that deep anywhere according to official depths I found on the internet?

Nah, I was at the dam a few weeks ago. Depth finder was in the 175-180 range the whole time. Nothing close to 200+ feet deep.

No, the 354 mark is feet above sea level,. Murray is about 150 ft deep at the dam.

It wasn't the largest man made lake. It was the largest earthen dam ever constructed at the time.

built.

Lake Murray, SC (WLTX) -Each year, thousands of people enjoy a day on Lake Murray, whether it's boating or swimming. But how much do you really know about history of the body of water?

When it was built in the 1920's, it was the largest man made lake in America. In size, the lake is nearly 50,000 acres, with roughly 500 miles of shoreline.

It was the Largest boat parade I have ever seen. Thousands of boats from one end of Lake Murray to the other. All in support of our President and Country. You won’t see it on CNN, but it was huge and GREAT.

In south Carolina of course. LOL

I've lived on or around Murray for most of my life. I've always steered clear of holiday celebrations, most especially 4th of July.

I was on Lake Wateree Friday before lunch with my SeaDoo. It wasn't bad at all but when I was leaving, I saw lots of folks putting in and lots of alcohol being carried to boats. I was glad to be leaving. I saw pictures later in the day and it was a mess. Way too crowded.

I enjoy peaceful mornings on Wateree but don't like Saturdays in the summer. I was on Lake Murray twice in the last month. One was a Sunday- it was too bad but it was getting crowded. The other time was a Tuesday and it was nice.

I know of 3 people that were killed on lakes over the weekend- not in South Carolina.

Could be that both are deeper than the official depth. According to DNR Murray is approx 200 and Jocassee 350. I’ve always heard as well from folks who grew up in the area that Jocassee had spot approaching 700. Would make sense given the topography of the area. I wish I could figure out how to post photos. I had a patient who’s father took a bunch of photographs of the gorge prior to the lake. It’s interesting to compare the photos with how things look today.

If you've ever seen the movie Deliverance, at the end there are scenes of earth movers and cranes. That was the beginning of Lake Jocassee. Most of it is just flooded land, but they did excavate some to build the damn. There's an entire small town submerged or so I've been told. It is a SC treasure nestled up in the northwest corner!

Jocassee is by far the most beautiful lake in SC. Not even close. If you want to see nature go there. If you want to see houses go to Murray. If you want to see boat docks go to Greenwood

I am actually trolling for trout over the top those structures as I text. Caught a nice 3.5 lb Rainbow earlier. About to get rained on.

I second that opinion. Try taking kids to places on the lake. Its not just an opinion, its an unbiased observation. I miss my parents generation. They at least had manners and knew how to act in public.
I did last night and all weekend. Last night we went out to an island and shot fireworks. We saw 3 other boats in the distance. I am sure they were being rude but we could not tell because the closest was a mile away. On July 4th the rude people beside us anchored to watch the fireworks offered us some food. Having lived at the lake since the 70s I am familiar with it. During the week there are not many boaters out. Very peaceful. If you only go on the weekends and hang out at the gathering places that is on you if you don't like crowds. On Sandy beach there are 3 sides. Family side. Party side. And hanging out and some camping on the front. If you have kids the party side is not a good choice sometimes.

If you have a boat and want to show support for our Country. Hit the water this Sunday and enjoy a fun family day on our Great local lake.[/QUOTE

Was it a parade for ALL that support our country...or was it only for Trump supporters?

Lake Wateree had a pretty large turnout as well. Estimated 2k-2.5 k boats. Saw lots of folks that should not have been on the water. We watched from the shore. When the front of the pontoon if taking on water because you have too many people up there, somebody needs to take some classes

A number of drownings this past weekend.

Deaths being investigated by DNR occurred on the Cooper River, Lake Murray, Lake Keowee, Lake Cheraw, Edisto River, and Lake Marion.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time, and very seldom have I seen weekends with so many drownings,” DNR Capt. Robert McCullough said.

Hobcaw, that 354 number is sea level, not water depth.
At the damn over the old river bed you may find depths of about 200 feet.

Probably because the lakes are full of swimmers / boaters. I have been on lake and coast waters my entire life and have never seen so many people on the water. I think because of the virus many people are Vacationing differently and enjoying their local waterways. The boating, RV, camping, outdoor industry sales are all setting sales records the past 3 months.

Correct. I’m trying to buy a new wave runner right now and every dealer within 200 miles is out of new inventory.

the Yamaha plant in Newnan, GA was shut down for awhile and folks spent their government checks on outside toys. So I have to wait a bit longer. Frustrating.

I hear that backyard swimming pools are in very high demand.

Last thing I want is a pool. But my little Grandson loves the water. So I sprung for a decent above ground so we can stay safe at home and get wet. I cannot tell you how difficult it was to find.

On a lark, my wife called a pool company to inquire about an in-ground. The most basic, standard, no-frills one was said to run between $30k-$50!!!!!!!!!!! To dig a big hole, put in a sheet of plastic, full with water and run a 4’ strip of concrete around the top. Utter insanity.

Something closer to our price range might be an above-ground, but I would guess they’re in demand and installations are probably back-logged through this season now...

Well, it’s a little more involved than you describe.

My pool was in the 27k range. (Not including any landscaping around the pool which I did myself, or pool accessories, robotic cleaner, etc)

True dat. Back in the day , there were penny candies. Like the little ones that Santa throws out to the kids in the Christmas parade. I guess they cost more than a penny now.

Somewhat, but they are always in high demand in the summer.

guy at my pool store said they had been steady this summer like normal but they weren’t Breaking any records in terms of new pools.

I voted for Trump in 16 but will not vote for him again in 20. I wonder how people can sleep at night voting for someone who consistently does not tell the truth who has an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others?

I sleep very well at night and will sleep well on a Tuesday in November. I look at it as the lesser of two evils. We are fighting a war in this country politically. I will not now or ever agree with socialism and the left is quickly pushing us in that direction. If you think any president tells the truth, you my friend are lying to yourself.
