Connor Brewer (I am surprised by no threads on this guy)

Connor Brewer (4-star out of HS) has two years of eligibility and just received his release from Arizona. He had offers from Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Tennessee, Nebraska, Arkansas, A&M, & many others out of high school. Here is what one Orangeblood insider said:

"South Carolina and Steve Spurrier have been after him hard. In fact, Spurrier has personally setup a visit for Brewer and he will be checking out the Gamecocks after National Signing Day on an official visit."

Texas is also a possibility, as are several other programs. Here is Connor Brewer going up against Arizona's 1st team defense (led by All-American LB Scooby Wright) from this past fall. I am sure you may think him an Arizona castoff, but the kid has some talent.

My understanding is that he can play right away, as he was given a full release by Arizona. He is a graduate transfer is why he doesn't have to sit out a year.

From CBS:

Arizona quarterback Connor Brewer is transferring. Coach Rich Rodriguez confirmed on Wednesday.
"We wish Connor the best as he graduates this spring and pursues his career at another school," said Rodriguez.
Anu Solomon started for the Wildcats this season as a redshirt freshman, and he played well enough to lead the Wildcats to the Pac-12 title game and a Fiesta Bowl game. Odds are that, barring an injury to new QB Solomon, Brewer wasn't going to be seeing the field too much in 2015.
Since Brewer's graduating, he'll be eligible immediately at his next school and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

His would be a HUGE transfer pick up! Immediate impact, loads of talent... Gives our young QBs someone to push them, or someone to start while Nunez gets the game plan down... This would be great.

If we add this guy and Helms in the same season... Well it would easily be the best "class" of transfer talent we have had that I recall... Lose a couple wideouts who couldn't stay out of trouble or crack the two deep, lose a couple non contributors on D to transfer/ early graduation and replace them with an All American center and 4* transfer QB who has shown he can play in college at A high level? a YES please!

Sounds like SOS is on the case! Never seen him go after so many guys from other teams like this... That is the kind of thing we see our competition doing- usually by taking OUR players it seems. Would be nice to see it work out in our favor. I think we all know Golson and Miller are not transferring here, this kid has more eligibility and no troubled history... I like this add if we get him!

By his, and his fathers on admission, the guy wants to return to Texas. I think its going to be very hard to flip that!

The fact that Spurrier is going after a qb with two years of eligibility doesn't say much for his confidence in Mitch.

I don't know if Mitch was the right go for us to go after. The offense he ran in HS ran a lot of timing routes kind of like Worley did at NW. The WRs were just expected to be there and be open. Our offense requires the QB to find open player down the field then throw the ball. The change of system might be too drastic for the guy.

That was my thought too, right when I read that Spurrier wanted him. Folks, we are in serious trouble at the QB spot this year. We basically have ZERO experience there, unless we can get someone like this brewer kid to come in and help us out.

There is a lot going on with this QB situation at Texas. Texas may be switching to more of a spread offense, which is why Texas lost Gentry to Michigan. We thought we had stolen Kyler Murray from A&M, but his legacy status there was too much. Locksley from Maryland may be an option, but he looks like FSU at this point. So we don't know if Strong and Brewer will decide a return is a good idea or not. Texas may be the favorite, but that is far, far from a lock to happen. Wherever Brewer goes, I think he will want to get there soon to be able to spring practice, or at least summer school with the team. Smart kid (4.0 GPA), will pick up playbook fast and not have to have any special entrance considerations.

We all know great high school stats do not always translate to the college game. But Connor Brewer did have some impressive numbers.

Brewer's next school will be receiving a compelling prospect. In three seasons at Chaparral High School, Brewer threw for 7,574 yards and 100 touchdowns and won three state championships. ESPNU ranked him as the nation's seventh-best quarterback and 130th overall prospect.

So what did he do while at Arizona? Can you list his stats while there, as being a 4* in high school means nothing if you didn't transfer it to the college level.

10 years into SOS era I never would have thought that the QB position would have been one of if not the most inconsistent position we have had. So many just don't work out for whatever reason.

Anu Solomon won the starting job and is a superstar in the making. Solomon, as a redshirt freshman threw for 3,793 yards, with 28 TDs and a 58% completion percentage. Took Arizona to a Fiesta Bowl.

So Brewer was beaten out by a pretty good qb at Arizona. Not so much Brewer was bad as Solomon was good. The video linked above in the Spring games is all I can show you.

Whatever reason? The Offensive line stunk with and exception of a year or two. That is the reason.

I'm not exactly sure what the excitement over this kid would be. I'm not saying he doesn't have potential or anything. But he is 3 years removed from high school (class of 2012). We would be the third program he has been in. He didn't play at all (or at least didn't record a single stat) during his first and only season at Texas (2012), sat out the 2013 season as he had transferred to Arizona, then never even attempted a pass this past season at Arizona. It wasn't just the rising star redshirt freshman he couldn't beat out at Arizona, but he couldn't beat out the other backups. Brewer only saw game action in 2 blow outs where his total stats equaled 1 rush for a 3 yard TD. No pass attempts. Let me repeat that, he has 0 college pass attempts. He literally has less game experience than Mitch. And in actuality Mitch was a higher rated recruit with just as good of offers. So I'm not seeing where there is anything to get all excited about. Nobody on USC's side seems to be reporting anything about this kid. So I somewhat question whether we have really asked him to come in. And if we have, I wouldn't read too much into that as I doubt Spurrier would be bringing him in with the thought that he was going to be our starter. If anything, just adding another decently potentialed (yes I made an adjective out of potential) QB to increase the QB competition.

If only it were spelled Conner there would be more posters on here excited about it.

Well he was intentionally redshirted as a freshman at Texas. David Ash, a very talented upperclassman was firmly entrenched at QB (now out of football with multiple migraines). Brewer had to sit out 2013 by rule, and had the bad luck for this Solomon guy to show up at Arizona. The fact that Texas is entertaining taking him back shows the respect he had here. As for Mitch being higher rated, both are 4-star, 5.8 in Rivals and Mitch was the 13th pro style qb and Brewer the 10th pro style qb. Pretty equivalent. The only reason for Spurrier to recruit him is if he has some doubts about Mitch and wants additional options if that doesn't work out. He wouldn't necessarily be being brought in as the automatic starter. All the focus is on signing day for the present recruits, where Brewer winds up will play out in the weeks following that.

I can't find a single mention of Spurrier or USC in news searches for this kid. Also... seems like GC would have reported an official visit if that was in the works.

With National Signing Day looming on Wednesday, South Carolina has a few situations still unresolved on the recruiting trail. However those play out, it increasingly appears there may be more important moments to come after this year's group of signees has put pen to paper. Coaching moves are expected, and more players may be brought in.

The latest name to surface as a possible late addition at the quarterback spot is Connor Brewer. He's well-traveled, having begun his career at Texas before transferring to Arizona. After two years as a Wildcat, Brewer's thrown no passes in a game but has positioned himself to transfer with two years of eligibility by graduating this spring. Sports360az.com quoted Brewer's father as saying Gamecock coaches "want to bring him in for a visit after National Letter of Intent Day".

...South Carolina has is as wide open a quarterback position as is possible for a guy looking to come in and win the job at a Power 5 conference school. No one's started a game yet, and few of the contenders to take over at the spot have even thrown a pass in competition.

Spurrier has historically been reluctant to take transfers, but with recruiting fallout continuing from his (since rescinded) admission he might only coach another season or two it seems he may be willing to revisit that approach. With top 100 quarterback Brandon McIlwain already committed for 2016 and touted freshman Lorenzo Nunez arriving this fall, having two years of Brewer as a bridge to them should Mitch not be up to the task could be a major help.

For those interested, Brewer led Chaparral to three 5A state championships as starting quarterback … An UnderArmour All-American and the starting QB for the West team … Logged a varsity record of 41-2 with 100 touchdown passes. Completed 441-of-686 passes (64%) for 7,574 yards.

Brothers, Charles and Chase, played baseball at UCLA and with the Arizona Diamond Backs … Sister, Abby, plays volleyball at Tennessee … Sister, Ashley, swims at USC and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the backstroke.

I did miss that one. His father ought to be a credible source but I learned during the whole Muschamp non-event that Gamecock Central is pretty much on top of what is happening (and NOT happening) around the program. I just find it strange that Chris or one of the other writers hasn't even mentioned this in passing, let alone as an actual possibility.

This - kid wants to go to Texas.

and yes- this shows how little the confidence is in the QBs we have on campus now.

There certainly have been fathers pretend there are a lot of other suitors to encourage interest in a recruit. You could be correct. Usually you see guys like this go to Tulsa or Louisiana Tech or the like and tear things up. But often that is done to avoid sitting out a year. With the graduation and release, he can go to any major college. Getting those colleges interested may be what the father is trying to do.
