Ok, so when it seemed like all of the other good options at DC were being snatched up by everyone else, Spurrier had seemingly already worked out a deal with Hoke. This is arguably a better fit for us then Muschamp. I'm always a little skeptical about having two head coaches on the sidelines because of egoes, and you have to remember that Muschamp's defenses at Texas got sliced up a decent bit when he was there.

Having said that, before you start praising Spurrier again, you have to wonder why an announcement like this couldn't have come after the NFL season was over? How would the announcement of Hoke on the defensive staff not had a positive affect on our recruiting. I had the impression that whatever decision had been made was being kept secret because we might lose some recruits. Out of the guys that we got, who would have jumped ship knowing that a long time NFL assistant was coming on board?

This is a great question. The explanation must be one of two things
1) Spurrier didn't want to upset his coaches while they were trying to close a few deals OR Spurrier didn't want to "artificially" sway a kid to come to USC.
2) Hoke was riding out the post-season to see what the Bears would do with Tressel and what the new coach would do if Tressel got the can.

If it was a done deal, why the heck didn't they say something/just outright hire the guy as soon as possible. That would make no sense.

I think we could all agree that Spurrier is a very smart individual, correct? Yes, he made a miscalculation with his 2-3 year comment, but overall, he's much sharper than anybody on this board (really isn't that hard to be, actually).

So, to your question, why wait? Wouldn't it be seen as a positive??
The obvious answer has to be "NO". Spurrier is a smart guy, with decades of recruiting experience, and decades of dealing with the media. If it would help, he'd do it. So, why would it be a negative?

Answer: South Carolina media.

Unless you are very new to this state, you should be well-versed in SC's media being able to find the negative slant to any story regarding USC. It's not new, and it hasn't changed much.

The media would've hounded Spurrier DAILY about this meaning he's retiring. The "Coach in Waiting" moniker would've become a part of every story even though it's not true. When did truth matter to SC media? Hey, remember, Ron Morris is still front and center at The State and apparently is covering USC these days. That individual is a proven LIAR. (Sidenote: it's good philosophy to live by that you should avoid anyone who proves to be a liar and most definitely distrust any words/actions from that person.)

Other schools would've gone to our recruits with the "No way Ward will make it another 2 years at USC". Again, truth doesn't matter, perception is everything. The SC media would've been printing daily stories about:
1. Spurrier is soon to be gone.
2. Hoke is the "Coach in Waiting"
3. Ward will not make it another year

And speaking of Ward, the guy is a great recruiter. He's also knows football x's and o's as good as anyone in the business. He tried just about everything he could last year, but your guys don't get exponentially better during the season. The range of success is defined by the offseason work, and that was pitiful last year. What Ward is weak in is the management of a program which essentially means he a bad manager of people. Hey, look around (well, those of you that actually have a job). How many coworkers were actually technically good, got a promotion to manager, and then stunk to high heaven? Being technically sound, is a separate skill set to managing people.

Enter John Hoke. He has ZERO recruiting abilities as he's been in the NFL for 15 years. No high school coaching connections, no area domination, nothing. But, he knows how to run a defensive program and how to manage people. So, he's a great compliment to Ward. Each are weak where the other is strong. Each is strong where the other is weak.

I will fall on the side of Spurrier over anyone here, and most certainly anyone in the media. The guy knows what he's doing. He got comfortable with the success, but that won't be status quo. It will change for the better, and soon.

Yeah, I actually think Hoke could've hurt recruting in the near term. Hell, it may have been as simple as he wanted/ needed the time off to get his affairs in order (moving, etc) before he started working full time.

Well said...hard to argue

Thank you, that explanation helped a lot.

Re: Does it really matter

what we think on this or other Gamecock forums? For months, people have proposed all sort of scenarios and built up imagined stories that they then criticized in every way possible. None - none of these people had a clue what was going on in the offices of USC and yet they criticized every move they imagined Spurrier might make in their made up games which had no connection to reality. All the while they bad mouthed "sunshine pumpers" who still had a belief that the HBC knew what he was doing.

Most of us, even the garnet glasses crowd, had reservations about how the team had played last year and were dismayed with the 2-3 year mistake. But venting spleens on a Gamecock forum can only cause more problems and never solve anything. Any prospect reading all this BS could be excused for having some reservations when the "supporters" of Gamecock football were blasting our coaches thinking, effort and plans so hard. It was a self inflicting wound when so many decided to go elsewhere and the naysayers felt this validated their predictions. I hesitate to call it "friendly fire" because it was anything but friendly. I have no idea if any were influenced to decommit by the negative stuff found here but it is certain that none were influenced to stay by it.

I don't give the staff a pass on everything they do but trust that they know more than I do about what works and what does not. Still sad that we lost several commits but am not party to the thinking of any teenager, even my own when they were teens.

Who else are people going to "trust?" Spurrier is the coach until he isn't. He's in charge until he isn't.

" I have no idea if any were influenced to decommit by the negative stuff found here but it is certain that none were influenced to stay by it."

That one sentence sums up how I've felt all along. If I'm a recruit thinking of coming to USC I would have had serious reservations after reading this board for the last couple of months. I'm still not convinced that wasn't the intention of some of the posts to begin with.

I have to concur. We'll see when certain posters seem to drop

off of the board now that NSD is over.

GOCOCKS! BEATUGA! BEATVANDY!

Re: I have to concur. We'll see when certain posters seem to drop

If Hoke had been hired earlier, and reports are true about Brown being the one moved to an admistrative role, Brown would have had to stop going on the road recruiting. What is really hard for some on this board is they actually believe they know how to run a college football program better than Spurrier. Everyone is getting caught up in having 9 kids decommitt and the class going from a top 5 class to 19th. That is not the case, heard one of the recruiting experts today say if all 9 kids had signed with USC the class would have ranked about 12th - 14th. Our class was ranked so high early on because of numbers.
