Dawn Staley a ‘top head coaching candidate’ for NBA opening, report says

You may not like LeBron, but name the time he has disrespected a coach? I’ll patiently wait on the specific examples. I’ll tell you what he has done. He has bet on himself by taking one year with a player option contracts several times to always put the pressure on a franchise that he may leave. That gave him the leverage to get what he wants and earn over 425 million dollars in player contracts. I don’t see it as disrespect for a player to recognize his worth and squeeze every ounce out of it.
Tall black athlete privilege. He's "earned" more than his fair share.

This is the typical opinion of a regular non professional athlete jealous of the wealth and power of athletes and other entertainers. Its always "they are over paid", not realizing its the people that drive up Lebron's wealth, not him just demanding it. Its simple economics that I am surprised most of you USC "grads" act as if you don't understand. An easy argument can be made that Lebron is underpaid relative to the economic power he has.

Dawn Staley a ‘top head coaching candidate’ for NBA opening, report says

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is being targeted to possibly fill an NBA coaching vacancy, according to one prominent league insider.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania, citing league sources, tweeted a list of the “top head coaching candidates” for the open Portland Trail Blazers job, with Staley among the group. Others include San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon, Los Anggeles Clippers assistant coach Chauncey Billups, Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Mike D’Antoni and Spurs vice president of basketball operations Brent Barry.

Portland fired coach Terry Stotts last week.

This isn’t the first time Staley’s name has been mentioned with a possible NBA job. Her name was mentioned over the fall with her hometown Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers ended up hiring Doc Rivers.

Staley also was mentioned in opening for North Carolina men’s basketball job. The Tar Heels ended up promoting assistant Hubert Davis to replace Roy Williams.

Staley was asked about possibly coaching men’s college basketball or in the NBA when she met with reporters on April 13.

“No ounce of me really wants to coach outside of college,” Staley told reporters via videoconference. “I don’t know why my level of interest has never been to coach in the WNBA, NBA or coach on the men’s (college) side. I don’t know why my competitiveness won’t allow me to go there. Maybe because I think there’s too much work to be done in our game. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done in women’s basketball.”

Staley has built South Carolina women’s program into a women’s powerhouse, winning the national championship in 2017 and leading the Gamecocks to two other Final Four appearances, including this past season. USC has won five regular season Southeastern Conference championships and six tournament championships.

Staley, Naismith Hall of Fame inductee, is also the coach for USA women’s national team. The USA team is playing in a FIBA AmeriCup qualifying tournament and played Dominican Republic on Saturday.

If she goes we are at the bottom of the barrel in the SEC in every sport that draws a large following. We are done. Ray hiring capabilities are well known. Look we have Beamer, Kingston, and Martin.

Token interviews are not the same thing as serious interest. Hammon is a real feel good story, but no NBA execs are truly going to believe that a woman can come into their locker room and gain the respect of these pro player personalities until they see someone else do it first. She should start at the college level, get a mid-major MBB job somewhere and prove she can handle male egos and be successful.
I don’t think these are token interviews with Hammon. She has been head coach for their summer team and is the designated head coach if Pop is ejected or sick.

She has been handling male egos in the NBA for 8 years as an assistant. Will be much different as a head coach. But hell half the guys that got fired in the NBA couldn’t handle the male egos on their team.

As to your suggestion that she go down to the college ranks, poppycock.

Of the 27 NBA head Coaches only Donovan went from college head coach to head NBA coach. Snyder and Van Gundy while head coaches in college but were assistants for several years. 6 or 7 other were college assistants but also long Time NBA assistants.
Gotta be In the NBA to get a head NBA job. She is in the right place if she is seeking an NBA top spot

Does Jimmy Sexton represent her? If not, too bad since he would have Ray doubling her salary and giving her a lifetime contract.

And she would be the only USC coach that will have actually earned that kind of deal.

If she goes, at least our fans can quit pretending they actually care about women's basketball.

“Mentioned” by the media trying to push women as viable NBA coaching candidates. No woman has ever been seriously considered for an NBA head coaching job, and that is not changing today. This is pure fantasy- Staley doesn’t want the job (she said recently she has no interest in NBA jobs) and Portland does not want her.
Portland has contacted Ray Tanner about speaking to Dawn, according to GCC.

She can't even win in college consistently.

If you think Beamer is the bottom of the barrel in the SEC, then you don't know anything about Beamer... He will have this program flying in 3 years faster than what Dabo did at Clemson...

I am aware. I will be happy to admit I am wrong if they hire her… Not the least bit concerned I will have to do that.

I must say though- It seems odd to me that so many here seem down right excited that the only successful coach we have is being mentioned for another job! What if she does get it? I don’t personally really care that much about WBB, but I have seen enough here who do to be surprised so many seem to be rooting fir her to leave and go to the NBA? Are we so woke now that we would rather celebrate a minority female getting an NBA job than celebrate Gamecock wins? I both feel confident this is a token interview and there is no legit interest AND I hope that I am right. As little as WBB means to me it is nice to have one sport we are actually elite at.

She is not the normal NBA assistant though. Nobody knows if she can lead young men to victory and instill confidence as a head coach yet. I find it highly doubtful any NBA team is willing to go out on that limb and be the guinea pig with their billion dollar franchise. If they were, she would have had a head coaching gig 3-4 years ago! She has interviewed in the past and it was never really seriously considered. She is much more like to be able to actually GET a job as HC at a college than at the NBA level- that is my point- not that it is some required prerequisite to be an NBA hC normally. They do not have the same type of concern about a man running a team that they would about woman coaching a team of ego-centric testosterone overdosed men. Fair or not fair I am right, I am just the inly one willing to say it because it doesn’t sound “PC”.

I'm excited for Dawn, not necessarily just what it means for minority women. She has to do for herself, and if this position comes through for her, that would be great. It would suck for our WBB program, and I'm against that. But I wouldn't put the school's WBB success ahead of her personal success, and what that would mean for her and other women. She has to make choices that are best for her and what she wants out of life.

He’s got a long way to go to matching that first full recruiting class Dabo had.

Actually Dabo was at Clemson on Bowden's staff, so no comparison one his full recruiting class. That class was worked on a couple years before Bowden was fired.

Beamer is coming in with nothing established and already off to a very good start. Don't be so much of a tater...

So then how is Beamer going to come through and turn us around quicker than Dabo did?

By asserting you are right, you must have the testosterone ego as well.

You make a good point, and may very well be right.

She would probably be a perfect fit with the views the NBA stands for.

Many people don’t understand how an athlete at the level of an MJ, LeBron, or Magic make money for everyone. The arenas they play in are full. The restaurants and shops around the arena are full. They drive TV ratings. The people in the NBA office are probably sick right now that Steph didn’t make the playoffs, LeBron’s team lost due to injury, the Nets are in trouble with Harden and Kyrie out, and that we might get a Utah vs. Milwaukee Finals. Ask the people in Cleveland how much LeBron is worth. Their franchise has lost Lebron twice and they have been terrible with little fan interest each time he left.

A franchise is going out on a limb anytime they fire or hire a coach. The Indiana Pacers fired Nate McMillan last year because they lost in the first round of the playoffs four straight years. The Pacers fired the guy they replaced McMillan with after one year. Meanwhile McMillan has led Atlanta into the second round of the playoffs. I watch a lot of NBA. The biggest thing in coaching on that level is getting a team to be consistent in their defensive principles and rotations. You know what’s coming with the offenses. High screen rolls with incredibly quick point guards trying to get in the paint and draw you in for open threes. The teams that shoot the three and/or defend the three the best are the most successful. Hammon can do that if she shows she is prepared and knows the game. I know Doris Burke is one of my favorite NBA analysts because she is prepared and knows the game as well as any male analyst.

I think it's you that missed the point and didn't understand. He was taking a jab at Lebron's political affiliation with Democrats. Socialism and wealth redistribution is great, for everyone else. Accumulating more wealth than anyone would need in a lifetime is greedy, unless it is their wealth. A CEO that runs a Fortune 500 company is overpaid and greedy for making millions. A guy throws a ball through hoop for hundreds on millions earned it and not greedy at all. Democrat love the wealth and benefits of capitalism for themselves, yet have intense disdain for it when it comes to anybody else.

Please. Premature on Beamer.
OK. Too soon on Beamer. I will stay quiet. But here I said it.

Never ever misfired in my predictions. Said Chad, Muschamp were misfires right off the bat. Said RT was a bad AD hire right off the bat. said Frank needed to go 2 years after the FF.

With that said I would be the happiest if Beamer succeeds. I hope he succeeds.

You are serious are you? You are not being sarcastic are you? Just checking.

Exactly. I basically just repeated the same nonsense I hear from Lebron and others on a daily basis. They only recognize how ridiculous it is when you replace the white man in their argument with a black man or a woman. I have no problem with Lebron's pay just like I have no problem with the wealth any other person accumulates.

Where is it? Richland county?

Her new home which took a couple of years to build is in the ritzy section on the west bank of the Congaree between the two bridges.

In Dawn's latest response ( 6-14-21 ) regarding the NBA job she says "no ounce of me wants to coach outside of college". " Too much to be done in women's basketball".
