did i hear that right; ward will be coaching DL?

That was what the guy said, but he isn't listed as the position coach. I was confused by that too.

In reality, I'm not sure what Whammy is going to do. Deke is the DL coach, Botkin is the LB coach, and Hoke is the secondary coach and D-Coord playcaller. Robinson is ST coach. Barring a change, what does Whammy do? "Coordinate the front 7" is a meaningless title. It seems like he's just hanging on the staff because we need him to do something to earn his $1.5 million the next 2 years. Hopefully they'll be some more changes (ahem "Deke, Botkin, and Robinson" *cough* *cough*).

well he did say someone else could end up with a office position or the same position brown is in,what ever that is?

It's seem like an attempt to restore the reputation of Deke and Whammy. Maybe he thinks with the players we have at that position now there is now way that the DL does not perform well. If the defensive overall is bad Whammy will be off the hook and Hoke will be on it. It pisses me off the lengths Spurrier is going to protect Deke and Ward. It's almost like he is more loyal to them than he is the fans.

I am not ready to make THAT accusation against him. He could just be trying to keep his coaches and the fans happy. If he is trying to restore the reputation of these guys by giving them the all-win-no-lose jobs, hopefully it's to help them find employment elsewhere, and that they won't be doing much or any real coaching.

to me, best of both worlds. Keep Ward as recruiter and he gets to save face with co-coordinator title. Real coordinator is Hoke, who's proven he can do it in the SEC, albeit 13 years ago.

Also sounds like Spurrier is thinking somebody else will be leaving, when he said he hopes Brown gets back on the 9 (actual coaches)

It is kind of the best thing for everyone, but it kind of rubs me the wrong way that if the defense is bad again Hoke is going to have to take the blame and Whammy and Deke won't get blamed at all. Something about that just doesn't sit right with me.

So Whammy is "Front 7 coordinator." Hmmm.... he's never coached DL in his life and he helped with the outside linebackers for 1 year as a Graduate Assistant back in 1993. Sounds like a "fluff title," I'm not sure what he does at this point.

It probably means, he does very little for a year and then get's hire by some sucker of a team.

maybe he goes back to s.miss and tke some coaches with him.

Coach Ward can coach any defensive position and do it well. I'm just glad that Coach Spurrier talked or begged him into staying on as co-coordinator. If he hadn't, Saban, Malzahn, Urban or even Dabo would have snatched Lorenzo for their program before we knew what was happening. Great coaches are always in demand with the up and coming programs.

Ward is the most popular coach amongst the players. And he was important to this recruiting class. If Spurrier had canned Ward we would have gotten hit with even more defections. Ward May not be a great DC (although he did have two top 20 D), he is a good position coach and a good person. I don't think Spurrier wanted the additional collateral damage that would come with his dismissal.

I swear nothing is ever clear cut around here. But it's still our most successful run so we deal with it.

Job titles don't mean anything these days. We won't know what his responsibilities are until this all plays out.
For the Ward haters, it was very obvious in the press conference, IMO, this is an obvious demotion.

I like the scheme already. Hoke is coaching the secondary and LBs and Ward is coaching the front 7. Having 14 players on the defensive side should help us this coming year.

It means we are going to get some $$$ out of Ward instead of cutting him loose and paying him $750k over the next two years for nothing. I thought he would move to CBs as that is what he was good at if my memory serves me correctly. As long as he appreciates the fact he didn't get fired and try to cause a division out of resentment we are good.

This is not what I wanted as Mushchamp would have been the home run hire, but this is light years ahead of going into next season with Whammy running the show.

Put Brown on ST's and let the rest, coach the LB and DL. If those areas don't show signicant improvement in 015,.......let Hoke fire them all
and bring in his own coaches for 2016 !!!!

It's never as black and white as our society would like us to believe. Spurrier doesn't fire people - especially ones that he has long-term relationships with (like Ward). So Hoke's hire might be a passive/aggressive move to push Ward out - or it might be a way of giving Ward better tools. Surprisingly, I'm more worried about the offense next year at this point. Although Hoke's hire might end in more sideline battles (like '13 UGA) or hurt feelings or whatever, it seems like without a QB, it doesn't matter how good the defense is.

Maybe so, but you gotta think they both know that when their contracts are up, they almost certinaly won't be renewed. At least, they BETTER NOT be renewed!

I know award has primarily been a secondary coach but I really don't know anything about his ability to coach dl or lb's. He should know where they are supposed to line up even if he doesn't know the reads as much.

To be honest, I thought Deke had been a lb so I thought he might move there. But in today's offenses, linebackers have to cover and work in space a lot more so maybe having Ward there will be positive.

The following is the "pecking order" for whom SEC coaches want to " keep happy."

1) National media
2) Ass't coaches
3) Athletics Director/ Univ President
4) Local media
5) Fans

Order may vary for Vanderbilt, but fans always last....

I don't think he want's to fire Ward and leave him without a job. I think he wants him to go find a good job somewhere else. Because as bad as Ward is, if you treat your coaches well, good or bad as they may be that is good for people wanting to work for you, and Spurrier is already a difficult guy to work for. Also, I think before Ward goes he wants to help Hoke or one of the other assistants establish the same recruiting relationships he has so we an keep our Atlanta pipelines open. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense, so long as Hoke is the real DC and Ward is DC in name only. The only thing that really bothers me is that Hoke should have his own coaches that know him and speak his language.

Well, the National media is probably the LEAST happy with us on that list right now.
