Don't think of it's possible to compare eras. Offense's play much faster these days.

I don’t know about best but they certainly are on par with 2001 Miami and the 94 Nebraska black shirts easily.
They are really good, but the book is not written yet. Let’s see what they do against some offenses with a pulse like Bama and Ohio State. They shut those teams down and they have a strong argument.
The difference is that offense have gotten better, sports science has gotten better, the rules have changed and teams scored less and forced more shut outs. A fairer comparison is who had the best performances compared to averages at the time and Georgia has the best when you compare it to what defenses do on average. In 1961 the wing T was still common, the QB want necessarily the top passer on the team and the I formation was still surprisingly new and Alabama didn't even recruit black players so the effectively limited their recruiting pool by 20%+
Exactly. They have not played any elite offenses. Georgia has a lot more to prove before they are crowned NCs or the greatest defense of all time.
Well they couldn't stop Zeb on the first drive until he got hurt. So there's that as well. I guess you could say top ten of all time, maybe, but they haven't really faced any great offenses. Barely faced any "good" offensive teams. So let the season end first and we will have a better idea.

Yeap that was the first team that I thought of . They were suffocating. I just remember all the receivers Sean Taylor and Ed Reed knocked out that year . That was an intimidating team .

Not even close to the best ever. This UGA team hasn’t played an elite offense, and probably won’t until the playoff if they get to see Ohio State. Bama definitely doesn’t have an offense this yr. After UGA wins next week the talking heads will make it sound like Bama had something more than a mediocre offense tho. The 2016 Bama defense was definitely better than this UGA D. I need to look back, but I believe that 2016 Bama team would have won somewhere around 6 games that year had their offense never scored a point all season. Pretty crazy!

Of course the 1939 Tennesseee team had 10 shutouts and 1.3 points per game
