I am using this down time season to review the quality of "chain" branded wings. Obviously there are plenty of local spots that may surpass the quality of the chain restaurants.,As we all have a passion for college football games and may find ourselves in need of a fall back spot for some cold suds and beer pre and /or post game in unfamiliar markets, it seems a worthy use of dead time happy hour research.

General Notes : I am a proponent of
  • "Flats" not "Drums"
  • Wet not Dry
  • Bone-in not Boneless
  • Naked not breaded
  • Ranch not Blue Cheese
  • Carrots and Celery for pallet cleansing
  • Miller Lite as my beverage
  • Quality and management of sports content on TVs can make or break even the best quality wing platter.
In no particular order here are some choices , again I am trying to limit this to chains to ensure broad availability

  • HOOTERS
  • TILTED KILT
  • WILD WING CAFE
  • BAILEY'S
  • DAVE & BUSTER'S
  • CHAMPS
  • BJ'S BREWHOUSE
  • BEEF O BRADY'S
  • SMOKEY BONES
I have not found a better chain wing than the TILTED KILT "grilled" flats with their signature sauce.

Any thoughts , on wings?

I prefer Wild Wing from your list. But I'm fine with Zaxby's or Buffalo Wild Wing.

I used to like Hooters. Do they still charge for extra blue cheese and celery? I found that policy insane.

Yes hooters still charges like 75 cents for another cup of Ranch. They used to give it out in individually sealed containers. I am sure that drove their costs up. THey have quit doing that but they still charge the 75 cents. I am not a fan of hooters traditional wings as they are heavily breaded. If I get them I have them fried naked (sans the flour). . I do like hooters clam chowder however, it is off topic.

I tried Buffalo Wild Wings once but found the wings small and overpriced. Wild Wing is pretty good. Though not as many flavors as on the menu, they have a decent lunch wing buffet.

Is Tilted Kilt really a "wing place"?

Might not be as big of chain, but I prefer Carolina Tavern.
But in the spirit of the op I prefer Hooters and Carolina ale house.

Yep tilted kilt is pretty much a wing place , though it would be right to say they have a broader menu than most .

Home Team BBQ in Charleston has the best dry rub that I've ever tasted. That's the only way they make them. I ordered them, was pissed when they had no sauce, tried one and my life changed forever.

Still the best wing I have ever had!

i never have liked hooters....that sounds bad....fyi im talkn about the restaurant before anyone goes off....ive always been partial to wings and ale....if you dont clean the bone dry, you aint eatn a wing....my wife thinks its gross, but i leave nothing behind

From that list, Wild Wing Cafe. They have so many sauces that you can't help but find one you like.

Slow clap for the clam chowder remark. Haven't had a ton of wings from the chains, but for Columbia, I'd say Wild Hare. Used to go there a lot for lunch for AYCE wings with teriyaki and/or lemon pepper. Also, Publick House used to have some fat tasty ones too, but haven't been there in awhile. Agree on most of the notes except, could eat all drums all day long, either wet/dry, but prefer dry, and I'd swear I was the only one, but ranch no matter the wing flavor.

As a wingman, I second this.
Not only the best smoked wings anywhere, certainly in the running for best wings overall.
Two locations: Charleston (West of the Ashley) and Sullivans Island.

In Seneca there are slim pickings. When the Cocks are on the road ( I am ashamed to say this) the wings from Domino's Pizza are awesome. Large, tender and juicy, spicy with lots of ranch, plenty of napkins and Coors light. Hard to beat..
