So what might the Gamecocks -- who are probably perceived as the
underdogs despite their No. 1 ranking -- lean on emotionally to get them
through any early butterflies and keep the Huskies from getting into
that all-too-familiar steamroller mode? Well, Dawn Staley, of course.
She is respectful toward Auriemma and the vast amount he has
accomplished at UConn. But she is not going to be deferential, and
that's as it should be. Auriemma certainly wasn't long ago when he was
in the "challenger to the throne" role.

No. 1 South Carolina Gets Its Chance Tonight Vs. No. 2 UConn

STORRS - South Carolina plays the most important women's basketball
game in its history Monday at Gampel Pavilion. There can be no doubt
about that.

Think back 20 years to the frenzy surrounding UConn's
wrangle with iconic Tennessee on Jan. 16, 1995. There was so much to
gain for the Huskies, most importantly the confidence necessary to win a
national championship a few months later.
Tennessee at Gampel,
televised on ESPN, was a chance for UConn to launch its program into
orbit. And UConn has circled the earth ever since. It's essentially the
same scenario now for South Carolina.

UCONN favored by 13.5...so Vegas doesn't think we have much of a chance either...

Probably not, but that's not what's important.

What is important is that we have gotten to a point where we are in the marquee game of the year. I don't look for that to end anytime soon.

Even our baseball program had growing pains, like the loss to ULaLa in the Super, but these experiences allowed our program to grow. Eventually, it pays off.
