Caught up with Wilson's junior college coach JJ Merritt to get an update on the 2021 wing's recruitment and wanted to pass along a few notes from the conversation.
For those who don't know, the Gamecocks offered Wilson at the end of July and his recruitment's blown up with Seton Hall, Memphis, Georgia, West Virginia and Kansas State have all offered too.
Wilson and the people involved in his recruitment are big on loyalty and, while South Carolina may not have been on of the first schools to offer him, the Gamecocks are one of the teams near the forefront in Wilson's mind.
That can be first accredited to Will Bailey, who was the first coach to offer him a Division I scholarship during his time at St. Louis. That goes a long way for Wilson, who's built a really good relationship with Bailey during his recruitment. The two were even texting each other workouts during quarantine before Bailey took the job at South Carolina.
When Bailey arrived at South Carolina he immediately added Wilson to the recruiting board and that meant a lot. Wilson's been on calls with Frank Martin as well and has gone on the record about hitting it off with the coach.
Does that mean the Gamecocks are definitely landing a guy like Wilson? No, but it looks like right now they're a contender in the recruitment.
There's still a long way to go in the recruitment but the Gamecocks have a legitimate shot. Wilson wants to take visits before making a decision on where he wants to go (he wants to be able to meet the coaches face-to-face and some of the players on the roster).
Right now it looks like South Carolina is in line for a visit whenever that happens.
Wanting to go on visits means a decision might not be immediate and could linger into the spring. That seems like the plan as of right now but that could obviously change depending on when/if players are allowed back on campus.
