1. Four things we learned from USC defenders

For the first time this spring, South Carolina's defensive players were available to meet with the media Wednesday afternoon about the progress on that side of the ball. Here are four things we learned.

Pickens has impressed

So far, so good for freshman defensive lineman and former five-star Zacch Pickens.

Not only has the T.L. Hanna graduate, who is Will Muschamp's highest-rated signee at South Carolina, impressed his coaches, but also his teammates so far this spring.

What's also interesting is senior D.J. Wonnum saying that Pickens has worked more at defensive tackle than defensive end so far this spring.

Senior A.J. Turner said: "I’ve only seen him a little bit but I would say Zacch Pickens (has impressed the most of the freshmen). I feel like he definitely looks the part and seeing the little things he does he’s really natural compared to other people."

Horn has high expectations

Defensive back Jaycee Horn didn't mince words when asked how good he thought the cornerback duo of Israel Mukuamu and he could be.

The two sophomores have been virtually inseparable since arriving on campus, pushing each other to be better on and off the field.

Horn said: "I think we can be two of the best corners in the nation. That's our expectations. That should be every corner in the nation's expectation, is to be the best, so that's what we're shooting for."

Turner wants to play both ways

As we've detailed before, senior A.J. Turner is working out at defensive back for the first five practices of the spring, but he's slated to move back to running back for the rest of the spring and for the fall.

But Turner, who will also play on all the special teams units, hopes he'll get to do even more.

Turner said: "I don’t really know how it’s going to play out. Ideally, I want to be a two-way guy but I don’t want anybody to think that I’m not fully committed to whatever I’m doing. I do want to be a two-way guy because I feel like I can be productive and help this team out on defense as a corner."

Roderick is high on Jammie Robinson

Sophomore safety R.J. Roderick is high on South Carolina's four-man incoming class of defensive backs, who will all arrive on campus by the summer.

He seems particularly high on the potential impact of one of those players this season. Maybe seeing a bit of himself in the incoming four-star prospect, Roderick's face lit up when talking about safety Jammie Robinson.

Roderick said. "Jammie, especially, I feel like Jammie has got some 'dawg' to him. He's shorter and more stocky built, he's physical. I really like that. I feel like Jammie is really going to come in and do some stuff for us, as well as Shilo (Sanders) and everyone else."

More Spring Football Coverage

Bentley looks to pay it forward with young QBs – When Jake Bentley was a true freshman simply trying to find his way, several veteran teammates stepped in to show him the ropes. Now a senior, with multiple young quarterbacks in the position he was once in, Bentley is doing everything he can to pay it forward. (link)

Pickens 'definitely looks the part' this spring – It hasn’t taken long for Zacch Pickens to start turning the heads of some of his teammates. The Gamecocks have only been on the practice field four times so far this spring, but that’s enough of a sample size to know Pickens already looks the part of an SEC defensive lineman. (link)

Several players getting work at left tackle – After losing two-year starter Dennis Daley, the coaching staff knew heading into this offseason that a new player would be manning the all-important left tackle position. Redshirt junior Sadarius Hutcherson, who played guard last season, was one candidate that the staff expected to get a strong look at the spot. The Tennessee native has indeed taken the reigns this spring. (link)

2. Rough day at the office

South Carolina spotted Gardner-Webb seven runs over the first four innings and 10 overall, while the Gamecocks only scored twice and tied their season-low with five hits to lose 10-2.

  • Gardner-Webb chased USC starting pitcher Hayden Lehman after 1.2 innings with the junior pitcher finishing with three runs allowed off three hits. He picked up two strikeouts and walked two batters.
  • Offensively, the Gamecocks picked up just one hit the first time through the order, a Jacob Olson single, and were shut out the first three innings of the game.
  • The Gamecocks are 10-3 on the season.
  • "Credit Gardner-Webb. They played better than us tonight in a lot of areas and they deserved to win." - Mark Kingston

What's next: The Gamecocks start a three-game series against Valparaiso on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at Founders Park.
Kingston announces weekend rotation: Mark Kingston officially has a plan for how the pitching rotation will shake out this weekend. The Gamecocks are doing some shuffling, bumping Reid Morgan up a day and starting a freshman on Friday night. (link)

How to watch: USC announced that the Valparaiso series will be broadcast on SECN+. However, because of the manpower and equipment necessary to operate the video board at Colonial Life Arena for the men's basketball game and the three softball games vs. Kentucky, production for the baseball series will be a single-camera feed with the radio call overlay.

3. New and notes

Sports Illustrated publishes a post-NFL combine top-100 ranking. (link)

  • Deebo Samuel is No. 53. "Viewed as a potential first-round pick during his junior year, Samuel wasn’t quite the same after breaking his leg in 2017. He’s an ultra-competitive catch-and-run threat who offers value in the return game as well. In his second-to-last collegiate game he lit up Clemson in Death Valley (10 catches, 210 yards, 3 TDs)."
  • Dennis Daley is No. 94. "Daley offers enough length and athleticism to become a starting tackle at the next level. He has room to improve, especially when it comes to his hand usage, but the level of competition he faced in college could have him ready for the field earlier than the other developmental OT prospects in this class."
South Carolina retiring four jerseys – Athletic director Ray Tanner announced that, for the first time since 2005, South Carolina will retire the jerseys (not jersey numbers) of four former Gamecock athletes: track & field standouts Terrance Trammel and Miki Barber, baseball pitcher Earl Bass and softball pitcher Trinity Johnson. (link)

Track & Field: USC earns three Indoor All-SEC selections – USC earned three All-SEC nods for the 2019 indoor season, the SEC announced on Wednesday. Quincy Hall was honored as a first-team selection, while Isaiah Moore and the 4x400m relay squad of Aliyah Abrams, Stephanie Davis, Wadeline Jonathas and Tatyana Mills earned second-team status.(link)

Softball: Gamecocks shut out Winthrop – USC produced its first shutout of the season as the Gamecocks defeated Winthrop, 3-0. Karly Heath went five innings in the circle with five strikeouts and also produced at the plate with the game's first run thanks to a solo homer in the fifth. (link)

Women's Basketball: Help send off the Gamecocks – The Carolina Band and spirit squads will be in front of the Hilton Greenville at approximately 4 p.m. Friday as the team departs the hotel for their first game of the tournament.

Baseball: Justin Smoak hit a home run in spring training Wednesday. (video)

Stewart cut by Broncos – Denver released Darian Stewart on Wednesday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported. Stewart also took to social media to thank Broncos fans for their support over the past four seasons, saying in an Instagram post that he "still had a lot of football left" in him. (link)

Softball: Game against Rhode Island canceled – USC's home game against Rhode Island on March 12 has been canceled. The game will not be made up at a later time. Fans who have already purchased tickets for the game can use them at any of remaining home game this season.

Equestrian: Ament earns NCEA Distinguished Alumni Award – USC equestrian alumna Courtney Borton Ament (2002-2006) has been able to blend her love of horses and her journalism degree into a successful business. 5. This Date in Gamecock History

March 7, 2002 – South Carolina opened the 2002 SEC Tournament by upsetting Ole Miss, as Rolando Howell scored with 17 seconds left for a 69-67 win. The Gamecocks had established a good lead early and led by four at the half thanks to 12 first-half points from Carlos Powell. USC expanded the lead to as much as 11 points in the second half. But the Rebels, led by David Saunders and his 26 points, rallied to tie the game with 37.5 seconds left. After Howell scored, Mississippi's Aaron Harper missed a 3-point attempt to end the game. Tony Kitchings led the Gamecocks with 16 points while Powell added 14.
