1. 7️⃣3️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 73 days!

Our countdown to South Carolina's 2019 season opener against North Carolina in Charlotte is now down to just 73 days, and today's player is redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Summie Carlay.

The 2019 season will mark Carlay's third with the football program. In 2017, he redshirted as a true freshman. Last season, he did not see any action. Carlay graduated from Laurens High School.

2. Commitment Corner: Vershon Lee

South Carolina added verbal commitment No. 13 to its 2020 class Tuesday evening with Woodbridge (Va.) Freedom OL Vershon Lee announcing his pledge to the Gamecocks on Twitter.

Bio: 6-foot-4, 285-pounds. Three-star prospect, No. 19 overall prospect in Virginia.

Recruiter of record: Eric Wolford

Offers: Boston College, ECU, Louisville, N.C. State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

Why South Carolina? "I liked (my official visit) a lot, because I was also with somebody that I knew from up north, Jakai (Moore), so it was fun. He was showing me around and I got to see how tight the dudes were and how tight the o-line is. It's like a family. They showed me the weight room, they showed me the school, they showed me everything I needed to see. They showed me about my major and I got to talk to a professor. I really liked the school."

More to know: South Carolina now has five offensive lineman committed to its 2020 class and is likely done at the position.

4. This Date in Gamecock History

June 19, 2002 – South Carolina advanced to within a game of the College World Series championship by defeating Clemson, 12-4.

  • Designated hitter Trey Dyson was the offensive star of the victory as he hammered a pair of two-run homers and Landon Powell and Steve Thomas each added home runs.
  • The USC pitching staff got off to a rough start, allowing four runs in the first 3.2 innings.
  • Matt Campbell rode to the rescue from the bullpen, pitching the final 5.1 and allowing just two hits and no runs.
  • Seven different Gamecocks had two hits and in addition to Dyson's four RBI, Drew Meyer and Justin Harris each drove in two.
