1. 9️⃣5️⃣ Countdown to kickoff: 95 days!

It's now just 95 days until South Carolina kicks off its 2019 football season against North Carolina and we're going to count down the days here with you on Gamecocks Today.

Today's countdown features No. 95, senior defensive tackle Kobe Smith.

A Lawrenceville, Ga., native from Archer High School, Smith has appeared in 37 games over the past three seasons making six starts. The 6-foot-2, 297-pounder has recorded 56 tackles including 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with five quarterback hurries.

Last season Smith had his best campaign since arriving at South Carolina and was graded as one of the best players on the Carolina defense by Pro Football Focus with a grade of 75.0. Smith played in all 13 games, making the first six starts of his career, and was credited with 39 tackles including 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four QB hurries.

2. Commitment Corner: MarShawn Lloyd

South Carolina landed verbal commitment No. 7 for the 2020 class on Monday when Hyattsville (Md.) Dematha five-star running back MarShawn Lloydannounced his commitment. Georgia likely finished second for the playmaker.

Bio: 5-foot-10, 200 pounds. Five-star prospect, No. 4 running back, No. 24 overall prospect, and No. 3 prospect in Maryland.

Recruiter of record: Thomas Brown

Offers: Auburn, Boston College, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, Michigan, Ole Miss, Nebraska, UNC, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M, Southern Cal, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.

Lloyd on most recent South Carolina visit: "Met the coaches. Got closer to coach Thomas Brown. I hung out with some of the players to figure out the lifestyle down there. It was definitely different. I really interacted with the players and it was very different and I liked it. I felt like I fit in well. Their offensive line is amazing. The running backs fit me as well. It’s a place where I can push myself and probably play early. Being able to have a coach like Thomas Brown and my coach now, pretty much not really a difference, that was a big up for them."

Scouting Report: There's a reason Lloyd is ranked one of the top running backs in the country. First, he's got a college-ready frame with the muscle and strength needed to play the position in the SEC. Lloyd is an explosive back with the ability to effortlessly change direction in the open field. Lloyd has also reportedly shown good hands and pass-catching ability on the camp circuit. He's an all-around back that should play early in the Gamecocks' scheme.

  • Carolina trailed 3-0 by the end of the second, but Marcus McBeth homered to lead off the third and Brennan Dees brought in John McHenry with an RBI ground out to cut it to 3-2.

5. Birthdays!

Randy Martz - Signed as a multi-sport athlete out of Elizabethville, Penn., Martz picked South Carolina over Penn State and Virginia Tech. He concentrated on playing football for his first three seasons on campus. He saw brief action as a freshman, throwing two passes against N.C. State. In 1975, as a sophomore, he again saw limited action, playing against Virginia and getting one rushing attempt for no yards. After not seeing any significant time in 1976 he decided to return to baseball and joined the team as a pitcher in the spring of 1977. Martz caught fire, picking up 14 wins with no losses while registering a 1.98 ERA. He beat Clemson twice that year and then had three complete-game victories in the post-season. He was named an All-American at season's end. Martz went on to pitch for the Chicago Cubs and White Sox before getting into coaching, both in college and in the minors.
