If you had the choice between Lexington or Richland County to live...

Richland.

I like being able to walk to a local bar to watch the Gamecocks versus having to drive 15 minutes to sit at the Chilis on 378

Well, for once, I agree with you AC. I lived in Cola 15 years, but moved to Simpsonville area 22 years ago. That was a generation ago. I was single during that time, but I loved living in Cola (Shandon) back then. I know the demographics have changed considerably since then. I used to travel the Midlands area with my job back then. Anything further out than Cayce/WC, Irmo, Spring Valley, was out in the sticks back then. Traffic at rush hours then was already out of control especially on I-26. As a single man, I could never understand why anyone would want to live anywhere else except near down town Cola. From a pure monetary standpoint (and family considerations aside), living in town seems more efficient. Unless you work in those outlying areas, I am not willing to give up 2 hours of my life a day riding or sitting in my car in exchange for just about anything.

What is WC/Cayce like these days? Great location to entertainment, food, USC, but what about neighborhoods, schools, etc?
I agree with everything you said, how do you like Simpsonville?

"Columbia is the only city in South Carolina that I would ever live in. It's easily the most unpretentious city in the state. Not to mention it has some serious mojo going right now."

You're 100% correct. Columbia is the ONLY place in SC I would live also. Upstate SC is the LAST place in the south I would ever live. And it's not just because of the orange rednecks either.

If your going to live in Richland county you should live in Columbia. I grew up in the Heathwood neighborhood and wouldn't want to raise a family anywhere else.

I have a Simpsonville zip Code (29681), but actually live 2 minutes from Five Forks right where the zip codes meet for Simpsonville, Greer, and Greenville. I rarely ever go to Simpsonville proper for anything unless it is to meet someone for dinner (who lives in Laurens County) at one of the Fairview Rd. restaurants. If I had it to do over again, I'd move more down town Greenville (Augusta Rd. area) or perhaps closer to Greer. I like being able to walk to a neighborhood restaurant, park, pub, etc. It is nice here for the most part.

The down side of living where I do is:
(1) I have to drive everywhere.
(2) My neighborhood was targeted several years ago by Michelin and BMW for relocation of employees who are only here a year or two, so the neighborhood has become a lot more transient. Many owners have moved out, but now rent their homes. Neither the tenants or the owners they rent from take very good care of the property. They apparently don't park any vehicles in the garages either because the streets are now lined with cars. The HOA sends them nasty letters, but then they resort to parking off of the driveways in their own yards. This violates the HOA restrictive covenants, but there is apparently not much the rest of us can do if the owners of the home do not take any action against their own tenants.
(3) The biggest downside is the overwhelming number of Clemson grads, and fans that live here. I definitely feel there is a hiring bias, but just living with the orange BS all of the time gets old. If I could get my wife to move back to Cola, I definitely would, but her parents are getting older, and live 5 mins away. She also has a sister here that lives a stones throw away which she loves.

Which would you choose? I gotta say Lexington for me and mine. What say you fine folks?
I live in the West Columbia area. I like Lexinton County. I am not sold on living in the town of Lexington though. The traffic is horrendous. If you're going to be working in Columbia I'd be real careful about what part of Lexington County you live in. I-26 and U.S. 378/U.S. 1 in during morning and evening traffic can be really trying.

Sir, with all due respect I have to respectfully disagree. I love that whole area. Every, place has a bad side but I love columbia. Some people love certain things and places while others dont. I live up near your teams neck of the woods and being honest it's horrible up here.
it pains me to say this, being from SC I will always have pride for my state. It was all I knew. Never lived outside of SC. After moving to Raleigh area and NC in general, I get why they look down their nose at SC. When you cross the border, the roads are the first striking disparity between the two states. Granted, Nc roads are not perfect, and gas is 30 cents more per gallon, but SC roads are terrible, bordering on third world quality. City planning, zoning, quality of construction, signage all better in NC. Yes taxes are higher, but business is streaming into NC. I have to believe infrastructure plays a role. It just looks better. Raleigh and Columbia were nearly identical in the 60's and 70's. Raleigh is now one of the fastest growing areas in the region. Columbia meanwhile looks like it did in the 70's and 80's, just run down. All kinds of potential in Columbia. The river could be great. The old CCI area could have been great. From what I have seen built in that area, more ugly architecture, certainly nothing awe inspiring

Kershaw county may be a better option than Lexington or Richland. New housing developments, very low taxes, and proximity to NE Columbia.
