South Carolina added another key piece of the 2019 recruiting class on Thursday when Memphis four-star Keveon Mullins made his commitment to the Gamecocks.
Mullins had originally planned on making his commitment at the Rivals Five Star Challenge this week prior to postponing that announcement, citing the fact that his mother wanted to visit Columbia and sign off prior to him making the pledge. After Mullins arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday, by that night he had another conversation with his mother and got the blessing to go ahead and pull the trigger the following day. The NCAA-mandated dead period is currently in effect, and it would be later in July before Mullins’ mother could visit. This is the direction it was going either way, and nobody saw any need to wait any longer.
If you see Mullins in person, he looks even bigger than his listed 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. He’s been pegged by major programs at a variety of positions, whether wide receiver, safety, or linebacker. USC’s staff really liked Mullins on film but wanted to see him work out in person first at receiver. Earlier this month, USC OC/WR coach Bryan McClendon spent a lot of time with Mullins putting him through a lengthy workout. The four-star prospect tested well with a 4.53 forty and over a 30 inch vertical and displayed natural hands as well. As he continues to progress with his route running and learning the nuances of the position, his size, ball skills, and physicality gives him a lot of upside. There are significant physical tools to work with here.
Led by Bobby Bentley, Will Muschamp, and McClendon, USC kept Mullins interested in the Gamecocks even in the midst of him making a commitment to Memphis and subsequently backing off it. South Carolina continues to do very good work in spot recruiting the state of Tennessee. The Gamecocks landed four-star OL Max Iyama in the 2018 class and followed that with a pledge from four-star DL Joseph Anderson this class. Now, USC has picked up another talented playmaker in Mullins and added him to the fold.
