South Carolina remains active in the transfer portal and has now added a commitment from University of Delaware linebacker Darryl "Debo" Williams, the former Delaware Player of the Year in high school.
Williams signed with Delaware in the 2020 class and would have made his debut this past fall but Delaware's season was pushed back to the spring and he entered the transfer portal earlier this week.
While the state of Delaware isn't usually a very fertile SEC recruiting ground, Williams is one of the most decorated players in the state's history and I'm told the Gamecocks actually found out about Williams from freshman running back MarShawn Lloyd, who is friends with Williams and vouched for his ability.
The 6-foot-0.5, 225-pounder collected nearly 500 tackles in his career as a four-year starter and three-time All-State honoree. After setting the school record with 128 tackles as a sophomore, he was on pace to break that record as a junior before an injury forced him to miss half of the season. Then as a senior, he broke his own record with 153 tackles, including 33 for loss, and eight sacks as he took home the DIAA Defensive Player of the Year award.
Williams has been timed at 4.3-seconds in the shuttle and at 4.8-seconds in the 40 on a laser and vertical jumped 33 inches, a sign of explosiveness.
Here are a couple of quotes on Williams from the Delaware State news...
Smyrna coach Mike Judy: “What he displayed this season was one of the best displays of leadership I’ve ever seen as a high school coach,” Judy said. “He has an extraordinary ability to diagnose plays and react. He can see the play happening one or two steps after the running back takes a step,” Judy added. “He’ll see something and know exactly where it’s going and how it’s going to get there. He’s a natural linebacker, loves contact.”
Salesianum coach Bill DiNardo, who coached against Williams twice: “I’ve seen some good linebackers come through the state but he’s one of, if not the best one I’ve ever seen,” DiNardo said. “When he gets to the ball, the play ends. When he gets to the ball, bodies fly. He is a tremendous competitor and a tremendous linebacker.”
