Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Siegel class of 2018 four-star offensive tackle Maxwell Iyama went public with a commitment to South Carolina Sunday afternoon as new offensive line coach Eric Wolford continues the process of rebuilding the Gamecocks' line.
His recruiter of record Bobby Bentley and Shawn Elliott previously offered the 6-foot-6, 280-pounder last September and Wolford has continued to make him a priority since coming on board. South Carolina was the first Power 5 offer at the time. Iyama visited for a game last year and was back on campus for practice this past week.
Iyama, who also holds offers from Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Memphis is considered a rising prospect who broke into the Rivals250 this past December. Iyama has the physical look of a prototypical offensive tackle with his size and length plus the athleticism to likely play left tackle. He will only get better as he continues to add add strength and weight. He will once again serve to upgrade the athleticism on Carolina's line, a high priority for the staff.
With the addition of Iyama to the offensive line class, South Carolina now has a true tackle to go along with two interior prospects in Hank Manos and Lamarius Benson, who were both considered high priorities for the staff. They like Manos a great deal due to his love of contact, wrestling background, work ethic and mindset. Benson was described to me as a "mauler" on the interior with good athleticism who is just now starting to realize his potential at the position.
I would look for Carolina to add at least one more interior and one more tackle from the high school ranks while continuing to look at the JUCO circuit as well, but don't consider those to be hard numbers. They won't turn down a player that can help, especially considering its a major position of need.
