*** Inside the commitment: TE Nick Muse

South Carolina landed a commitment from William and Mary transfer tight end Nick Muse on Saturday, which undoubtedly led to many questions on the board. Here's some context on Muse and what the Gamecocks are getting...

** When discussing the future of various position groups this offseason, tight end was singled out as one that the Gamecocks needed to get better at. In fact, it's one of the few positions on the roster that, at the time, fit that description when looking at the young returning players and the prospects Carolina is after.

Looking at that position, Carolina has two upperclassmen in Kiel Pollard and Kyle Markway, but is completely unproven past that with a junior Evan Hinson, a sophomore Will Register, and two true freshmen in Trae Kenion and Keshawn Toney (the staff is high on both freshmen).

Muse enters the program this season as a junior with a redshirt year available. Depending on if he receives a waiver from the NCAA, he'll either be a junior this season or a redshirt junior in 2020. Pollard is a senior this season, so he's gone in 2020, and Markway will be a senior in 2020.

Roster management and attention to detail is one of Will Muschamp's strongsuits and Muse helps bridge the gap between the upperclassmen and the underclassmen and balances out the tight end position.

** Muse worked out for South Carolina's staff at camp this past week and was easily the best tight end in the group that day, consistently getting open and making several grabs. In fact, @Chris Clark came up to me and said, "We've got to figure out who that tight end is, because he's a guy."

** A South Carolina source that tipped us off on Muse impending commitment on Thursday told us, "we get better with the addition of Muse. He's definitely going to help us." No staff is perfect, but in other words, this wasn't considered a reach internally and was more of a no-brainer take.

** LSU, N.C. State and East Carolina all also offered Muse as a transfer and wanted the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder, so Carolina wasn't out on some limb here.

** Muse, whose brother is Clemson DB Tanner Muse, played football, baseball, basketball and track and field at South Point High in Belmont, N.C. The two-time defensive captain collected 65 tackles, as well as 32 catches for 654 yards with 10 touchdowns, en route to helping SPHS win the 2016 3A State Championship.

As a sophomore at William and Mary, Muse was second on the team in catches (30), receiving yards (453) and touchdowns catches (1) including a 71-yarder against Virginia Tech.

** South Carolina remains in good shape with several high school tight ends, to include Jaheim Bell and Eric Shaw, and still plans to take a high school tight end in the class. The Futurecast system doesn't allow us to make predictions for prospects committed to other schools, but if it did, I'd be tempted to put one in for the Gamecocks will Bell.
