The Gamecocks took the field on Saturday afternoon and hosted the NC State Wolfpack. Pitching Coach Skylar Meade made it known earlier in the week that a lot of their young pitchers would throw on Saturday.
Unfortunately, rain and lightning ended things after just four innings. But there were some moments that opened my eyes to the talent on this team.
-Julian Bosnic: Bosnic got the start today and pitched for two innings. Hit the first batter he faced and allowed a run in the first inning. Thought he did a good job of settling into a rhythm after the first two pitches. He topped at 87 on his fastball.
-Hayden Lehman: JUCO transfer made his first appearance in the garnet and black on Saturday. Lehman immediately impressed me with his ability to work the breaking ball of his first pitch fastball. Lehman did a fantastic job of painting the inside and outside edges with his breaking ball. It seemed to me he was in control on the mound. It wasn't a "big time" atmosphere by any stretch, but making his first appearance did not seem to phase him.
-Dylan Harley: Harley's one inning of work was much like Lehman's. A three up, three down inning where he looked in control of the at-bats. Another young cog who could factor into the long relief role as it takes shape late in the fall and into the spring.
-South Carolina's offense seemed to have the pop in the bat today. Noah Campbell, who has impressed Coach Mark Kingston and staff with his exit velocity, went long on the first pitch. Campbell went opposite field to left on what could only be described as a laser.
-Newcomer Andrew Eyster also had a productive weather-shortened scrimmage. In his second AB of the day, Eyster launched a no-doubter that just missed getting into the bleacher seats in straight away left.
-N.C. State had a different pitcher in each inning, which did not affect Kingston's message to his players. He just asked them to keep their approach and make something happen.
-There was no update offered on Logan Chapman, Kingston saying they'll know more in a week.
-The game was called in the top of the fifth after a rain delay then subsequent lightning delay just as the tarp was being removed from the field.
-South Carolina is scheduled to play Georgia Tech next Saturday in Atlanta.
