We’ve consistently mentioned Georgia offensive lineman Warren Ericson as a substantial target on the interior of the offensive line for the Gamecocks. The three-star prospect’s stock has exploded in recent weeks in terms of major scholarship offers, but he’s been heavily on South Carolina’s radar since camping in Columbia last summer. Since then, Ericson has returned to campus multiple times including this spring. The Gamecocks have a built-in advantage with Ericson’s older brother, Peyton, playing midfield on the Carolina men’s soccer team. Ohio State recently jumped in with an offer for Ericson and is one of the programs most consistently mentioned for him along with Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. The competition has stiffened for USC here as of late, but the Gamecocks are in a pretty spot with him right now. Here’s a bit more in a network update from Rivals.com.
South Carolina was the first SEC program to offer North Carolina’s Alim McNeill this spring, and he returned the favor by visiting for the Gamecocks’ spring game. McNeill gave that trip a strong review to GamecockCentral.com, saying he loved the atmosphere and speaking with the coaches. Head coach Will Muschamp took some time to have a conversation with him while McNeill was on campus. Look for the staff to make an effort to get McNeill back on campus to work out with Lance Thompson along the defensive line this summer.
A couple prospects we’ll mention in this space that South Carolina’s staff will want to get another look at this summer…
Murfreesboro (Tenne.) Riverdale 2018 prospect Jarek Campbell checked out South Carolina earlier this spring and has collected offers to date from Kentucky, Louisville, and Memphis. Listed by Rivals.com as an athlete, the USC defensive staff believe he projects as a safety and Will Muschamp spoke with him about making an appearance at a one-day camp this summer.
An in-state name to file away for the future is Florence (South Carolina) West Florence’s Sharrod Simmon. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder has athleticism, as he can run and sports a nearly 38-inch vertical leap. The question is where he projects at the next level. He has a thick build, but his skill set is more suited to play defensive back of some variety. He’ll likely camp in Columbia this summer, and the Gamecock staff is aware of the 2019 prospect.
We had some subscribers ask about Louisville graduate transfer Shaq Wiggins. You’ll recall that Wiggins transferred from Georgia in May of 2014 and landed at Louisville, where former Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was on staff and in charge of the defense. Now Wiggins is leaving again, and Grantham took a job as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State. One would figure that the Bulldogs are a major factor, and we hear the same. South Carolina and Tennessee are a couple other programs that Wiggins has looked into, I’ve been told. We’ll keep everyone posted if we hear anything further on this front.
Georgia linebacker Ernest Jones visited South Carolina last week for the first time, then turned around and made his way back to campus again just a few days later to take in the Garnet and Black Game inside Williams-Brice Stadium. Jones is still moving closer to a decision, one that he would like to make prior to the summer. Auburn, Duke, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina are all significant players for Jones, but in reading the tea leaves there’s a notion that the Gamecocks have really caught his eye. Jones would like to play in the SEC, and two visits stacked back to back has South Carolina on his mind.
