Let’s lead this edition with notes on a few targets that we do not anticipate South Carolina landing on Wednesday.
Former Gamecock commitment Bryce Steele has kept the lines of communication open with head coach Shane Beamer, but the timeline and uncertainty regarding the staff layout in Columbia has had Steele inclined to stick with his second pledge to Boston College.
Steele confirmed both to us and via social media on Monday that he’s inking with the Eagles on Wednesday.
We’ve also heard from multiple sources to expect Gaffney’s Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins to go ahead and sign with UGA on Wednesday.
We also expect Sumter’s Justus Boone to stick with Florida; he’s signing on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
South Carolina’s early signing day on Wednesday will, as we’ve already said, be smaller than a typical one given the circumstances. Many of the Gamecocks’ current verbal commitments are expected to ink:
Nick Barrett
O’Mega Blake
Jordan Davis
Marcellas Dial
Colten Gauthier
Caleb McDowell
Sam Reynolds
TJ Sanders
The Gamecock staff is after several junior college prospects in this class to attempt to fill needs on the roster; two of those targets are teammates with Dial at Georgia Military College.
Defensive back Isaiah Norris, an Upstate native, was Beamer’s first offer once he took his post in Columbia and that immediately vaulted Carolina to the top of his list. While Norris has not made a commitment yet, multiple sources believe the Gamecocks are in line to sign him on Wednesday.
Defensive lineman Byron Young, a Carvers Bay product, is another GMC prospect that has been expected to sign on Wednesday. He’s an early enrollee, and South Carolina has been in the mix as of late. Auburn seemed to have a lot of traction; Young has family in nearby Columbus, Georgia, and he expressed dismay on social media at the news of Gus Malzahn’s dismissal on The Plains.
This one is not quite clear yet, but we’ll continue digging.
Mississippi product Qua Davis at wideout is an early enrollee and has said in the past he plans on deciding this week, but it's not clear as of this writing what his plans are for tomorrow. We'll continue working it.
Another JUCO product, pass-rusher Jimmori Robinson, is not slated to sign until February, although he may choose to render a commitment sometime this week.
If he does, South Carolina stands a strong shot. A Virginia native, Robinson said that he’s been in contact with Shane Beamer daily and that his peers back in Virginia know and respect Beamer because of his ties to the state.
Georgia linebacker Trevin Wallace is one of the most talented prospects on South Carolina’s board for the 2021 class, although he’ll also be waiting until February to sign with a program.
Wallace has connected with Shane Beamer, and told GamecockCentral.com that he was a “chill dude.” The Gamecocks are still in it, Wallace said. One interesting note here is that Wallace also held Auburn in high regard, and the Tigers are obviously undergoing a coaching change. This timeline gives South Carolina some time to assemble a staff and go from there in taking a swing at a talented prospect at a need position.
South Carolina extended an offer after Beamer’s arrival to Alabama athlete Juwon Gaston, who tallied 11 special teams touchdowns last season for his high school team.
Gaston seems plenty intrigued by the offer from the Gamecocks, but there’s time to be had here as well; he’s waiting until February to sign with a program.
