Recruiting Tidbits

The most impressive aspect of the class Carolina landed this year is the fact that six four-star prospects have already enrolled, and I could see all six playing this season. With Stephon Gilmore, it’s just a matter of which position he’ll play in 2009. DeVonte Holloman is physically ready to play right now and has the kind of football IQ that should allow him to pick up the system quickly.

Jarvis Giles is expected to challenge for the starting spot at running back, assuming he gets his body where it needs to be physically. At the very least Chaz Sutton will help in pass rushing situations, and he may be ready to make a bigger impact than that when all is said and done. Both Tony Straughter and Josh Dickerson are expected to challenge for a spot on the two-deep in 2009.

While he may be tough to land given his offer list, one player you could see the Carolina staff try to get involved with in the coming weeks is Plano (Tex.) Plano West defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat. The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder has a lot of family members living in the Columbia area ? mainly in and near Swansea. He is the son of Jim Jeffcoat, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys, who was born in N.J. and went to school at Arizona State, but both of his parents were from Swansea, and he grew up visiting the Columbia area often.
