Recruiting Tidbits
My pick for the top overall player Carolina landed in their class of 2009 is Stephon Gilmore. I believe he could be a star at the college level at any number of positions - cornerback, safety, wide receiver, running back or quarterback. While Ellis Johnson really wants him to be a cornerback and recruited him with that position in mind, the Gamecocks lack playmakers on offense, so it’s still under discussion where he’ll play as a freshman. The picture should become clearer in the spring.
Former Georgia Bulldog and current Georgia Military defensive lineman Michael Lemon has been extended an opportunity walk on at Carolina. He was dismissed by Mark Richt after being involved in an altercation. I understand he has some academic work to accomplish before he’ll be eligible to enroll in Columbia, and it’s not a done deal that he’ll make it. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more.
Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman wide receiver Charon Peake is one of the best overall prospects in the Palmetto State’s class of 2011, and he’s racking up an impressive offer list. Carolina and Clemson were the first two schools to offer some time ago, and programs like Georgia and North Carolina have followed suit. The Bulldogs are the latest to offer. I hear he’s pretty open overall, but Georgia made a strong impression on him at their recent junior day he attended.
Carolina was the first school to extend an offer to Buford (Ga.) defensive lineman Kolton Houston during his junior season. Clemson, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and Vanderbilt have since followed suit with scholarship tenders. Shane Beamer has done a good job with Houston and has the Gamecocks in the thick of it to land the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder.
