- The last weekend in May could shape up to be a significant one in terms of South Carolina’s offensive line recruiting.
We anticipate that four-star offensive tackle commitment Issiah Walker to be in town that weekend making a long-awaited return to Columbia. Since landing a commitment from Walker (he had a handful of offers at the time), the Gamecock staff has watched as other programs have jumped in by the boatload with scholarships to the Sunshine State product.
All the in-state programs – Florida, FSU, and Miami – have made pushes, in addition to some name programs from outside Florida. FSU gets an at-bat this weekend with Walker traveling to Tallahassee. While Walker has continued listening to others and has been taking plenty of trips elsewhere, the feedback in terms of South Carolina being able to keep him has also been positive. The bottom line is that it will always be an angle to watch until Walker shuts things down totally. The official visit later this spring to USC will be a big one.
- We made mention in a recent Insider Report that four-star Florida lineman Josh Braun is likely to take an official visit to Columbia in May. While the date has not been nailed down with certainty, it would be wise to keep an eye on that final weekend.
- USC picked up another potential selling point for another offensive line target on Monday from the NFL ranks. Former Patriots offensive lineman Trenton Brown signed a deal with the Oakland Raiders that will make him the highest paid offensive lineman in the league – ever, for that matter.
Brown, of course, is a junior college product who went on to play for Will Muschamp at Florida. Eric Wolford then helped coach him with while both were with the San Francisco 49ers. You can probably see where this is going, as South Carolina is after another massive junior college product in Jaszton Turnetine who reminds some of Brown with his frame. Turnetine has yet to confirm an official visit date to Columbia, but he’s another one that could be in late in May. USC was first to offer here and Wolford got out to an early start.
- One defensive back visitor coming up in March to keep an eye on – Tennessee’s Dajeun Gibson. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder will be making his way to Columbia on March 28 for a closer look at campus.
