In this edition, we’ll take a closer look at USC’s remaining targets on the offensive side of the ball in the 2019 class…
Even in times where it’s been unjustified, there has been some consternation among the fan base as to just how solid South Carolina quarterback commitment Ryan Hilinski is in his pledge.
It started up again, understandably in this situation, when Hilinski’s self-described “dream offer” in Stanford came through recently. Yet in talking to Hilinski and others in the last few days, there is reason to feel plenty good about the Rivals100 passer winding up at South Carolina in January as planned.
Hilinski told us on Sunday that the chances he takes a visit to Stanford were “not high”, and it’s our belief that things have settled down even more since that time. Aside from the offer being extended very late in the process and his desire to attend South Carolina anyways, the situation in terms of academics is really untenable here. Hilinski has already planned on graduating from high school in December and enrolling at the program of his choosing (which again, has been South Carolina even in the midst of a bunch of high-level offer) in January. Stanford does not accept early enrollees. On top of that, Hilinski would have to take multiple AP classes and do so in the spring.
USC’s staff has been in communication with both Hilinski and his family members not just since this development, but consistently. Everyone’s on the same page and Hilinski and his family will be in town for the game against Tennessee next weekend. As we’ve said, during that trip the plan is for the family to work towards finalizing housing plans for their move to the Palmetto State.
Back on Friday, Wes Mitchell brought our subscribers more on in-state wide receiver Xavier Legette out of Mullins. He’s a prospect that South Carolina has quietly been in on since the summer, when Leggette camped in Columbia and ran a 4.5 forty, broad jumped over 10 feet, and posted a 36 inch vertical leap.
Leggette is someone to keep a close eye on now as having potential to ultimately end up on South Carolina’s roster.
Speaking of receiver prospects, the plan next year is for South Carolina to get back 2018 class signee Tyquan Johnson out of prep school at Fork Union. The Peach State product would indeed count towards the 2019 class. A reminder: USC has an extra slot (so essentially, five remaining) since kicker Shane Hynes never went on scholarship and left the team before the season.
The Gamecocks also continue to recruit a pair of offensive linemen, and the names remain the same: Darius Washington out of Florida (Mississippi State commitment) and Jakai Moore out of Virginia.
Washington has made it clear for some time that it could be tough to pull him away from Mississippi State, but he has made official visits to South Carolina and Miami and both of those remain in the mix. Moore has gone silent in terms of media attention, but is still in regular communication with USC’s staff. The Gamecocks still have a strong shot with him, and some parties believe that USC could hold the edge over Penn State and Ohio State. Moore has publicly named USC as his leader in the past.
