Recruiting tidbits
Powder Springs (Ga.) Mceachern tight end Terrell Mitchell is not someone Carolina is still involved with, despite his claims that he plans to set a visit to Columbia. As of today, unless something else materializes, it’s Phillip Lutzenkirchen or bust at tight end, and they’re working him hard to set a visit.
Also, Gamecock commitment Justice Cunningham is indeed going to start his career at tight end. He’s currently at 255 pounds. That’s not to say he couldn’t end up on the defensive line later in his career, but he’s going to get his first look on offense.
From what I’m hearing the most likely scenario for Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe wide receiver Charles Holmes is for him to head to junior college next year versus prep school. His academic situation just isn’t one that will allow him to go the prep route.
I am hearing very good things about the recovery of Gamecock commitment Damario Jeffery from his surgery to repair a torn ACL and PCL in his knee. He’s a very fast healer. He had a similar surgery on his other knee in the ninth grade and was running full speed less than three months later.
Team Information
Chris Smelley is going to get the nod at quarterback because Spurrier believes he has the best chance to execute the game plan he wants to employ. If the offensive line can protect and Carolina can establish some semblance of a running game, I think Smelley will play well. If not, he may struggle.
The team will work on conditioning today and then the players will be given the weekend off. The coaches will be on the road recruiting tomorrow.
