Recruiting Tidbits
Leesville (La.) wide receiver and Auburn commitment took his official visit to the Plains over the weekend after previously visiting South Carolina and Michigan. New head coach Gene Chizik hired Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator, the same Malzahn who implemented the “Wild Hog” offense at Arkansas a few years back. He wants to run the same package at Auburn, and he wants Stallworth to be his trigger man. I hear that may make it tough for Carolina to land him, but we’ll see how things play out. I look for a final decision from Stallworth in the next few days.
Steve Spurrier, Brad Lawing, and Lorenzo Ward were at Greenwood High yesterday to meet with four-star defensive end Sam Montgomery. His recruitment is still a circus, but if you put a gun to my head today, I would pick UNC as his most likely destination when all is said and done. That could change on a dime, though, as there is really no telling what he’ll do on signing day.
Another player to keep an eye on at Byrnes High Schools for 2010 is wide receiver Nick Jones. He has some academic issues to overcome, but he’s a very good player who will attract a lot of D-I attention if he improves in the classroom. He also has some people around him who would prefer he attend Carolina, something that could ultimately help with Marcus Lattimore.
Speaking of Lattimore, while Carolina’s lead isn’t what it once was, I still hear the Gamecocks are the team to beat. With the departure of Robert Gillespie, it’s imperative that Jay Graham hit it off quickly with Lattimore. How Carolina performs on offense in 2009 will also play a big role in Lattimore’s decision.
