Insider Report - September 30th
With the start of a new football season, GamecockCentral.com is happy to announce a new feature: The Insider Report. Check back each weekday during the season for a new edition.
For continuity reasons, if you have question regarding this report, please use today’s “Ask Tony" thread on The Insiders Forum.
Recruiting tidbits
With the commitment of Josh Dickerson, Carolina is now finished with linebacker recruiting. Of course, this is assuming nothing happens with any of their other commitments, but as things stand today, they don’t plan to take any more backers in this class.
Carolina also does not plan to sign a kicker as things stand today. Spencer Lanning projects as a Ryan Succop’s replacement at kicker, and a walk-on will handle the kickoffs.
After talking with Coffeeville (Kan,) four-star offensive lineman James Carpenter, I got the impression South Carolina is where he wants to go. He’s from Augusta and would like to get closer to home. If the Gamecocks offer, I like their chances.
Landing four-star offensive lineman Johnnie Farms was big for Carolina. He projects as a guard, and the Gamecocks really need help inside. He’s a little on the short side, but he has the qualities they need in a lineman - toughness, athleticism, strength, etc…
Team Information
One of the most interesting dynamics of this weekend’s match up with Ole Miss will be Steve Spurrier’s play calling against Tyrone Nix’s defense. While it was never termed as such, Nix was forced out at Carolina and will obviously have a lot of incentive to do whatever it takes to win this game and for his defense to play well. On the other side of the ledger, the game is sure to get Spurrier’s competitive juices flowing. Whichever one calls the better game will probably emerge victorious.
