Recruiting Tidbits

After watching Sumter (S.C.) four-star running back Roderick McDowell the last two days at the Shrine Bowl, there is no doubt in my mind that Tampa (Fla.) Gaither four-star running back Jarvis Giles is the better prospect. I’ll be surprised if the final Rivals rankings don’t reflect this as well.

Columbia (S.C.) safeties and Carolina commitments Damario Jeffery and Chris Payne both have some work to do academically. They can still make it and reportedly are working hard, but there is some uncertainty there at this point. Don’t panic, as they need to work most on their test scores and have several attempts remaining.

I’ve heard more positive things where Kevious Watkins is concerned, and I feel better now about his chances for making an immediate contribution than I did a few days ago. The key is getting his weight down and him working hard on his conditioning, something the Carolina coaching staff is going to make very clear to him. He is supposed to be sending me his highlight DVD, as long as he does it quickly, Rivals will re-evaluate his player ranking before the final ratings are released next month.

There seems to be an unusual amount of confusion on how many new players can enroll at Carolina for the 2009 season. Right now, that number is 27, regardless of whether they enroll in January, May, June, July or August. If more than 27 qualify, Carolina would have to grayshirt the necessary number of players, but I doubt that will be needed.

Team information

The news that Emanuel Cook has been declared academically ineligible for the Outback Bowl does not come as a surprise, as I had heard from multiple sources that he was not attending class like he needed to. I think it’s safe to say he has made up his mind to declare for the NFL Draft whether he’s ready for it or not. Look for Akeem Auguste to taje over Cook's spot in the starting lineup.
