Insider Report - September 24th
With the start of a new football season, GamecockCentral.com is happy to announce a new feature: The Insider Report. Check back each weekday during the season for a new edition.
For continuity reasons, if you have question regarding this report, please use today’s “Ask Tony" thread on The Insiders Forum.
Recruiting tidbits
Continuing the trend of Carolina recruits getting injured, Richland Northeast defensive lineman Chris Bonds has cartilage damage in his knee and will need arthroscopic surgery. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out of action.
Offensive lineman Johnnie Farms did not commit to Auburn over the weekend and received a visit last Friday from Gamecock recruiter Robert Gillespie.
Assistant coach Shane Beamer attended Calhoun County’s game on Friday, observing prospects like Alshon Jeffrey, David Sims, 2010 lineman Eric Mack and 2011 star Shamir Jeffrey. Some believe Shamir is the best prospect of all the players on the team.
I’ll have a story on the later today on Irmo (S.C.) running back Mustafa Greene. He is one to watch in the class of 2010.
Team Information
As things stand today, I’ll be surprised if Stephen Garcia gets the nod as the starter this week. However, he is expected to play a significant number of snaps and get the chance to show he’s the better option for future games.
The move of C.C. Whitlock to cornerback is much more about the future than the present. Carolina will lose Carlos Thomas and Stoney Woodson for sure after this season, and the possibility remains that Captain Munnerlyn could bolt early for the NFL. Whether Munnerlyn returns or not, the Gamecocks are going to need help there and cornerback is Whitlock’s most natural position.
Kenny McKinley has every intention of playing on Sundays next year regardless of when he makes his return from his hamstring injury.
Rodney Paulk has been bothered by a knee injury this season and is a candidate to apply for a medical hardship at the end of the season, which would leave him with two years to play.
