Yes, top right hand of page there is a pic of an envelope, click on it. choose who you want to start conversation with and make it private.

No, but I haven't looked for anything in writing, either. Just fooled around the message page, trying to figure it out. I'm not a premium member & it doesn't appear to be an option.
