For two more years. Nothing from GG about any increase in salary or buyout.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are I don't like it....way too early. I understand a contract talk/move with one year left IF he was coming off two CWS appearances....sure - we can even make a contract move two years out if that's the case.

But, this makes no sense to me. Nobody is beating down his door wanting him to come to their program for the money he currently earns. Can't point to recruiting....at some point certain level players know their talents will be utilized wherever they end up...and ultimately want to be part of programs that put them on the stage to consistently SHOW what they can do... and are less worried about who the HC is while they're playing. At some point RT HAS to pay these guys based off of what they have proven they can do, and not what he thinks they can do. 58% win percentage just isn't where we want the baseball program. It wasn't in shambles whatsoever when he took it over...went to the supers in year 1 with Holbrook's guys.

I hate to point out the obvious....but discluding 2020 (covid/partial year...which really SHOULD help this year's W/L stats with super seniors, etc) he is 99-77 in first 3 full years (56% win % and has finished 3rd, 5th and 4th in conf play).
Holbrook was 119-63 (65%). I know CH was mostly fired off his last year....but at 199-105 (65% win %)....it makes you wonder how RT sees this as going in the right direction. BTW....CH has won 64% of his games at CofC....pretty consistent.

So- was CH's tenure really that bad, or was it the more of a "following a legendary coach" curse?

As they say, you almost have to do this for recruiting purposes. As long as you don't add ridiculous buyouts, there's nothing wrong w it.
I agree with this, keep the crazy buyouts out of the picture and try to build some continuity. I think he is doing a good job, not great but good. Give him time and let him continue to build.

Lame duck coach if you don't. Have to do it for recruiting. As others have said, if no buyout increase, pretty much SOP.

For sure, if he doesn't address our hitting, in a year or two his seat's gonna get hot.

I ran into a paywall, so how long did his current deal have to run? If it was two years or more, this was definitely premature. He ain't THAT good.

You never want to be the guy that replaces “the guy.” The last year was down right inexcusable and when Holbroke got to the point of blaming fans and interviewing at Charleston mid season, it was a foregone conclusion. Holbroke isn’t a bad coach, just bad for USC.

Now you bring up valid points about Kingston. I never cared for the hire (well documented here) and the closest he’s been to Omaha was year one. I think Kingston has two more years to figure it out, but I would have liked to have seen us make a hire like LSU did. I thought at the point we fired Holbrook we were that caliber of a program. However we took a chance on a guy that’s never coached this level of baseball before. Right now it’s showing there is still a learning curve at the very least.

I think two years left, so this would take him to four.

You need that for recruiting. There is no stability in any job for sure, but it's all about the perception to recruits. They want to know that they'll be playing for the same guy, because the next guy may or may not see them fitting into their plans. Kingston did that to several that came in under Holbrook, two that I have direct knowledge of. Basically, "I wouldn't have offered, so while we will honor the scholarship, I don't see you playing in the future". Kids want to play, get "processed", and transfer. Happens in every sport, and especially during coaching changes.

It’s fair.

Do I think he has what it takes? Nope.

But, there are certainly positive signs and he deserves a chance to prove he can fix the offense and bring the defense and overall team makeup to SEC-leading and CWS-worthy caliber.

Two more years should do it. One way or the other.

His overall compensation isn’t bad, comparatively speaking -

It was bad. There were clubhouse problems also.

Agree…..we finally got a good pitching staff but the bats have to get better. I’m OK with a contract extension as long as they don’t add a pay raise or some crazy buyout figure

Holbroke's teams got progressively worse, culminating in that inexcusable and embarrassing final year. He managed to fool a few people into having false hope after we backed into hosting a Super in Year 4.

Outside of that outlier, he was clearly only capable of capitalizing on Ray's program he inherited.

Yes, and the real story behind that has never come out.
Tommy Moody once said it had to do with insubordination. Others have said he questioned/called out Holbroke's management in front of the team (I'm assuming out of frustration that we all felt.)

Don't know if that's the full -- or even partial -- story. But it seems to jibe.

Yes I do remember that.

Don't have an issue with it. Almost have to do it for recruiting. And have to remember, he has to fix the mess left that he inherited. He didn't get to inherit the top program in the nation like his predecessor.

Why not? Tanner rewards participation trophy coaches... Can win your own regional and get rewarded... Tanner wants his legacy to continue so no one can winning a national championship in baseball.

Maybe Tanner needs to go back to NC State and build a new legacy there...

Tanner needs to go!

Regarding the extension, at least Kingston didn't receive the Ray Tanner Special with unjustified raises and ridiculous buyouts that put us in a huge financial hole. This is strictly an extension for recruiting purposes without all that other stuff. If things were to really take a Holbrooke-esque nosedive next year, we could still get rid of him with relative ease.
