Lady Gamecocks 7. Mizz 4 final.*

What an awesome game... Gamecocks were down 4-0 to #15 Mizzou heading into 7th inning. Got a run, then with 2 outs they get a 3 run bomb to tie it, then a pinch-hit 3 run bomb in extras (8th inning) for the game winner.

Team will likely be in the NCAA Tournament for the 4th year in a row.

Not trying to be a jerk to the OP, but why call them "Lady Gamecocks"? We just call the women's soccer team, the volleyball team, and the Equestrian team "Gamecocks" right? I only recall the women's basketball team using the moniker "Lady Gamecocks," although I believe they dropped that roughly a decade ago. Does the softball team use it now?

I hope you can get some sleep tonight.

Jeff, I'm just wondering if I missed something. If that's just your preference to call them that, more power to you. Realizing that tone doesn't translate well over the Internet, that's why I specifically said that I'm not trying to be a jerk.

Ok, but I don't have a tone.

I'm not saying you have a tone, I meant that it's easy to be misunderstood on the Internet. Anyway, Go Cocks!

everything gets lost in translation.....i think everyone should just pass out their cell numbers so we could call each other....:) and thats sarcasm for those of you taking it seriously

Technically all of the women's teams at USC are "Gamecocks" not "Lady Gamecocks." It's been that way for a long time now, but many are slow to catch on due to what they are used to. TN women's basketball is Lady Vols as that is their brand, but the rest of the women's teams are just Vols as they dropped the Lady moniker recently. Most schools have moved away from "Lady" in their nickname over the last 10-20 years.

Reasoning actually makes sense... there is no such thing as a "Lady Gamecock" and we don't call the men's team the "Men's Gamecocks." The school is the University of South Carolina and the mascot is the Gamecocks. There is no gender in a mascot name. If you're an alum of the school (male or female) you also call yourself a Gamecock. A few schools choose to have different names, but for the most part, that is a thing of the past to use "Lady."

Old habits die hard, but it makes sense to me that they are just Gamecocks.

I gotta go with Jeff on this one. At the wbb games I've been to I hear plenty of women saying how much they love the "lady gamecocks". Should I go tell them to stop using the word lady? Even Ray Tanner has said it numerous times when giving out team awards. Its really a non issue & our administration is too laid back (in a good way) to care either way. If some people like calling them the lady gamecocks nobody is gonna stop them & for those who don't like it good luck trying to get the wbb fans to abide by the book.

Not a huge deal, but I'll add to the conversation. Call them what you want, but to call them anything other than what their real name is, is kind of silly and inaccurate. They're Gamecocks, officially. Never heard Tanner say "lady", but I've heard other fans etc incorrectly say Lady Gamecocks too, but that's beside the point.

I guess I just see it as a matter of respect to call them by the same name as all of the other (male) teams, as some might say being called anything other than the official name makes it sound like they are unworthy or they don't count. Of course there was the disaster in the 1970s when the women's basketball team was called the "Chicks."

The argument that stuck with me the most was that you don't call the men's basketball team the "Men's Gamecocks" or "Male Gamecocks" so why do you have to identify the gender for a women's team?

For what it's worth, the women's teams at SC have been pretty darn good this year: soccer made the NCAAs, basketball won the SEC for 3rd straigth year, golf won the NCAA regional and is heading to nationals, tennis is hosting an NCAA regional, and softball is expected to make NCAAs as well.

Go Gamecocks (be they men or women).

I get what you're saying its just a way to distinguish between the two teams. For instance, if someone were to ask "Did you watch the gamecocks basketball game today?" The obvious response will be "which team?". I don't see where calling the women's team "lady gamecocks" makes them seem any less worthy than the men's team. The women's bball team is probably the 2nd most popular sport at South Carolina right now behind the football team. I believe you are fighting a losing battle if you're concerned with what title fans give them. Even the players have refereed to themselves as lady gamecocks so why would fans take issue? Many fans, male & female, will continue to refer to the wbb team as lady gamecocks so worrying about it is a waste of time Jason :)

Wasn't worried about it. :) Just adding to the discussion and posting facts for those who may be ignorant of those facts. I'm a fan of Coach Staley's and I have heard her correct reporters etc when they say "Lady Gamecocks." Doesn't matter one way or the other really. To me it's sort of like when the university tried to brand itself as "USC." It doesn't matter that South Carolina was a university before California was a state, nobody around the country refers to us as USC. That's a whole different can of worms! (For the record, I just prefer "South Carolina" over anything else.)

Definitely love 'South Carolina' over anything else. Love that the wbb jerseys have that across the chest rather than just Carolina like the men's team. Kinda feels like they represent the state & not just Columbia, SC.
